V 1124 Update does not run on Win 2000

I tried to update with the official patch (version 1124) exe, but my Win 2000 tells me "this is no valid Win 32 application"

Is there a patch to get the newest game version that does run on an 32 bit windows?

It's a Win32 program, but it may be set to not accept Win 2K.

This is strange. I searched for other patches when this failed and found one (version 1084 or so) which installed just fine.

Yeah, win 2K was a very odd bird ...

Win 2K and XP were virtually identical inside. Installers can be set to only install on certain OSs, and it may be the latest patch installer was set to only accept XP and later.

Bill, I would never have guessed that. 2K always exhibited so many stability issues whereas XP was a very stable platform. Or maybe I am thinking of ME?

ME was the last DOS based Windows. Win 2K was an evolution of Win NT, which in turn was built on a highly modified UNIX kernel. Win 7, 8, and 10 are all further evolutions of the NT kernel. I found Win 2K to be almost equally stable as XP.

The internal version numbers for Windows can be quite confusing compared to the advertised version numbers. As a programmer, what you get when you query the version number is more like the last column in the chart below. You will notice Win 2000 was NT 5.0 and XP was 5.1.

Back to the point of this thread, I don't have the EXE for the patch. I use the development channel so I don't have the official releases. Sorry, I'm sure someone else has it.

That would be nice. I will use the meantime to re-learn this game. It's been a year since I played and on my first day yesterday I remembered why exactly I always had pen and paper ready.
It is a pain so see you forgot to manage XY when the turn resolves.

Is it possible to continue a game with a newer/patched exe or do I have to start over?

You can update games in progress to a new EXE. When you load a save with a new EXE, you will get a warning message that the version has changed and you will be asked if you want to update the save to the new version.
