This year’s Home of Wargamers (#HoW15) is approaching.

The dates are now officially fixed for June 23rd to June 25th and the event is being held at Vittorio Veneto, CastelBrando, a town full of heritage and history between Venezia and Treviso.

The first and most important news is that this year’s event will be solely open to our development partners: we have decided to organize a developers conference, rather than a press conference, so that we could really focus on the future of wargaming and strategy gaming.

We will have keynote speeches to talk about game engines, business cases, game play issues, but also sales channels, price positioning and many other topic to create a true debate about where the wargaming and strategy gaming markets are going and what we should all do to drive the change.

You, as players, are all invited and you will have a chance to take part to the event through live streams, ask anything on Twitter and through the forums. So stay tuned and watch out for further information!

Check for the official site and keep up-to-date with #HoW15 here!

HoW15 will try to address some of these issues with the help of success stories anf failures, experiments and best practices. Because if it is true that there is no secret formula in how to make a game successfull with press, influencers and players, it is also true that a good planning and the right execution can help key titles emerge from the crowd and increase their chances of success.

few spelling mistakes there ^^

There is a totally new approach to game graphics nowadays. Back when everything had to be 3D and modern gaming was defined by shaders and number of polygons, wargames slowly started to shift to being called 'a niche'.

Now there is a big opportunity to capture a new audience and make wargames mainstream again. This opportunity comes from a new approach to designing game graphics and UI style; a wave we have to ride to attract the attention back to our genre and increase the size of the market by creating games that are not only innovative from a gameplay perspective, but set a new tone in visual approach.

At #HoW15 UI and art style will be debated in a dedicated panel where Art Director Richard Evans will introduce some best practices and engage with the best wargames developers in the world about the subject.

make them easier to play would help, looks are eye candy, you can make something as good looking as you like, but if it's full of errors, bugs or just too steep a learning curve you turn off 90% of the war gamers you already have, not counting the new one you wish to target the games for, and yes it's that simple, everyone wants new games, new area to fight in, new engines to look at and use, new maps and theatres to play in, but if you make them too complex, and too much micro management, manuals as thick as the encyclopaedia's then maybe your targeting a too niche market anyway as these type of players are far too sparse to give the revenue to bring back a return.

game models by design need to cater more for a larger group or players, so the learning curve needs to suit a larger type of players for all games, not dumb them down just for the lowest player, add in the AI so it can take more burden away for the casual player and can be turned off for the more geek like among us and make that a goal of development and coding.

AI and UI need to be modern and right from day one, not basic adding after day one release, do it well and forums silent, do it wrong and forum is a blaze or poor comments, if one thing you will have learnt this year with steam games, the average age of steam players / buyers are younger than main forum users who tend to dislike and remember mistakes for longer and be more verbal in there replies, where site forum users tend to be more reserved in the main and think more long term most of the time.

next point is, look at the average age of the developers there, then look at the games your making, and think why or how do you know what the younger generation wants or needs? or can even give without first asking them.

keynote speeches from old or older men who have spent there life designing / programming war games are one thing, but until you step back and see what the younger ones even want, it will stay a niche market.

idea's need to be fresh, with good design and not just copy what's been happening over the last 20 odd years with the view well this sells well so if we re hash it and gloss over some bits it will re sell again with a new name and number / version, while yes the model might sell well, but for how much longer is it or will it be true?

with phones and iphones / tablets / consoles being more and more mainstream, steam being a well supported platform, times are changing, war games aren't atm imo and haven't since i first played them over 30+ years ago, aged 48 this year i also have no idea what the younger players even want, while i've spent the last 25+ years working with them teaching in one form or another.

the few new games that have come out and had thought out of the box and tried to break the mould, haven't done so well as many would have hoped, for me for some not only was they not supported enough or pushed enough, but the forum developers replies for some of them wasn't as good as it could have been, adding in slow fixes / patches when bugs were found added up to them almost dying as quick as they took to make in the first place.

a forum is a ready made shop where your target buyers are already there, treat them to goodies and show them new stuff and you do well, forget this and leave questions and bugs unanswered and soon good buyers become moaning none shoppers, a reply saying it's being worked on or i'll get back to you with a answer is better than no reply at all, even if you have none imo.

good developers spend time on forums replying to the buyers, poor ones don't and can pay a high price for it, so it's a balance between living on here and work, life, some do it better than others.

easiest way to find out who is better than others is see replies in each section and by who, some developers have lots of posts while others have little to none, yes not all came at the same time so it's not about post count as that's wrong, but a % times posts v time onboard isn't that hard to work out from most sections imo

well that's all for now, good luck and hope your trip to Italy goes well.
