Not This Frickety Frack Again (SOLVED)

Post by Admiral DadMan »

Had it working in Windows 8.0 in November before this latest March 2015 patch. I updated to 8.1 sometime ago, and yesterday installed the latest patch. Anyone have any ideas beyond thermo nuking the HDD?

I have DxDiag from Oct 2014 and May 2015 if that helps.

No tricks at all were needed here. The only thing that fiddling with the program's switches did was deal with the performance.

If you had a compatibility mode switch set (such as run like Win XP), I've found Windows sometimes spontaneously resets those. One program I run in XP compatibility mode on two computers randomly gets that cleared when I reboot sometimes.

Then there are the command line switched in AE too as witpqs mentioned.

No compatibility switches were set, to my memory. Both WitP AE AND WitP are borked. I've uninstalled both, and and re-installed both, starting from the release versions and applying the one patch for AE and the several for WitP. Same result.

I am beside myself p1ssed.

BTW, do you mean Windows 8.0 literally? Why haven't you upgraded (free!) to 8.1?

I just ran a quick test to make sure recent Windows patches haven't fragged anything and it still works on my Windows 8.1 (not quite the latest AE patch I have loaded there but I figure a good test).

Correction: I was using 8.1 in October. Just checked my DxDiag from then.

With the help of Matrix/Slitherine tech support, I found and corrected the issue, and it now runs.

In October, I ran a DxDiag while helping to Alpha test World of Warships, so I had a baseline to compare with one I ran last week.

In October I had this:

Graphics Preemption: DMA
Compute Preemption: Thread

In May it was this:
Graphics Preemption: Primitive
Compute Preemption: Thread group

So I Google searched "How to set Graphics Preemption: DMA" and found this How to set the changes of color of my screen display back to default?

I did the Ctrl Alt F8 and rebooted. PRESTO!

Thanks to everyone who expended mental CPU cycles to assist.
