WITPAE AT START UNITS
AUSTRALIAN ARMY
Working in no WITPAE order, Ive listed slot numbers


I have little complaint about the units chosen to be listed, there were lots of, for example Light Hrse Regiments, which had a short life and where often at about 25% TOE.

But these units were then spread all around the map, few are actually in the correct locations, locations often covered by units which should be elsewhere.

If someone can make corrections to this info, please go ahead and let me know the source. I have basically used the War Diaries from the Australian War Memorial, but have found contradictions so am happy to make changes.

There needs to be bases created to replicate the Seymour/Puckapunyal, Bandiana & Greta/Rutherford/Singleton complexes. (I'll post suggested hexes next)

The Bird units should be Force rather than Bn, Lark Bn is lame, should be Lark Force.

All Tank Attack Rgts s/be Anti Tank Rgts until 6/43

2/11 Armoured Car Rgt should be at Tamworth
5957 has it at Charleville

2/5, 2/6 & 2/7 Arm Rgts should be at Singleton
5967&5968 are at Charleville and 5969 at Newcastle.

2/8, 2/9 & 2/10 Arm Rgts should be at Seymour
5970 is at Mildura and 5971 & 5972 at Broken Hill.

3 Independent Coy should be in Sydney, it left for New Caledonia on 8/12/41,
unit 5987 arrives in Sydney on 25/12/41

2 Recce Bn should be at Beenleigh (Brisbane hex)
6052 is at Cloncurry

1 Cavalry Bde is called 1 Motor Bde, this change doesnt happen until early 1942. AE has it at Cairns but I have 5 Mot Rgt at Gympie & 11 Mot Rgt at Gatton which are about 100km north of Bribane. (I have also seen the Bde at Cairns and its HQ at Toowoomba????)

11 Bde should be at Townsville with 51Bn at Cairns
6039 has the Bde at Brisbane.

47Bn should be at Maryborough and 42 Bn at Yeppoon/Rockhampton. These units become 29 Bde in late January 1942.
AE has 6040 at start at Bundaberg.

53 Bn should be at Sydney getting ready for Pt Moresby,
AE has 5058 at Townsville.

4 Cavalry Bde 6044 wasn't at Bathurst, it was covering the coast south of Pt Kembla, we don't have any bases to cover,Its units were at different towns. For the game Bathurst is the only option.

6 Cavalry Bde should be at Adelaide
6045 has it at Mildura

1st Bde should be at Newcastle
6014 starts at Sydney

5th Bde should be at Sydney
6024 starts at Canberra

8th Bde should have 2Bns in Newcastle and 1Bn Sydney
6023 is in Canberra as well.

14th Bde should be at Newcastle.
6022 is in Wagga

39 Bn should be at Darley Camp, Baccus Marsh. Melbourne would do.
6056 is at Sydney

22 Motor Rgt should be at Brighton Camp. Hobart would do
6053 as at Queenstown

3rd Cavalry Bde should be at Geelong
6043 is 3 Motor Bde at Melbourne, name change comes later

17 LH MG Rgt should be “near” Geelong 6048 is at Mildura

19 LH MG Rgt should be “near” Geelong 6049 has it at Portland

30 Brigade forms at Port Moresby on 3 January 1942, the game has 6055 arriving 420315 and should absorb 39 Bn, 49 Bn & 53 Bn.

109th Tank Attack Rgt 6134 should be 109th Anti Tank Regiment at Perth

4th Bde should be at Bonegilla 6027 is at Melbourne.

10th Bde should be at Seymour 6028 is at Portsea

15th Bde should be at Seymour 6029 is at Sale

2nd Bde should be at Mt Martha (Portsea) 6053 is at Portland

6th Bde should be at Balcombe (Portsea) 6032 is in Adelaide

3rd Bde should be at Adelaide 6060 is at Broken Hill

10 Recce Bn (often called 10 LH Rgt) should be in Perth 6050 is at Geraldton (But often trained in that area)

25 LH MG Bn had companies at Albany, Busselton, Bunbury & Geraldton
6051 is at Albany

44Bn was at Perth
6063 is at Kalgoorlie

49 Bn (less 1 coy) should be at Port Moresby

13 Bde Its Bns (11,16 &28) were in Perth
6011 28Bn is at Busselton

NGVR Coys are listed as NG Rifles

108 Tank Attack Rgt
5961 should be at Seymour

5963 2/4 Arm Rgt starts the game, it was formed 11/42 at Wee Waa (nr Tamworth)

5983 2/1 Independent Company should be 1st Independent Company (and changes name in 1942, it had detachments at Kavieng, Vila, Tulagi, Buka so should not be solely at Kavieng)

5984 2/2 Independent Company should be 2nd Independent Company

5986 should be Kanga Force, not Kanga Force Bn,Was more a Headquaters and consists of many in-game units. ( it was also formed from of 1 Indep Coy, 2/5 Indep Coy & the NGVR.)

6014 1st Infantry Bde should be at Newcastle, not Sydney

6016 18Bn should be at St Ives/Sydney, not Newcastle

6017 41Bn should be at Newcastle as part of 1st Bde,

6018 45Bn should be at Pt Hacking(Sydney), not Port Kembla

6034 32Bn should be at Mt Martha(Portsea) with 2nd Bde, not Mildura

6035 38Bn should be at Balcombe with 6th Bde not Geelong.

6062 Port Moresby Bde Doesn't exist, Port Moresby had 49 Bn(-1 coy) and Papuan Inf Bn.

Wren Force should be Nauru Force (changed 8/41)

Heron Force should be Ocean Force (maybe Ocean Is Force?)

2/16 Field Rgt should be 16 Field Rgt

21/22 Field Rgt should be individual units until merged.

To enable allocation of Australian Army units above at least 3 bases need to be added,they can be 0/0 as no major airfields were associated with them.

Seymour Hex 82,169 Represents the Seymour/Puckapunyal complex.
Bandiana Hex 84,169
Greta Hex 90,165 (Or 1 hex further away from Newcastle) Represents the Greta/Rutherford/Singleton complex.

v4 now posted with final base list (I Hope) Jap AI is UNCHANGED form v3 and as far as I am aware remains stable

Only amendments are some movement in Aus Army locations and renames etc in line with Jeff's post - I couldn't take them all but I did take most of them

And a few final Australian bases added.

jap AI is stable now need to start work on re working some more elements of allied AI before I move onto variants

I am considering one change that I want to get some views from the forum on


For the core Scen 1 the allies have lots of bitty marks of aircraft and I am considering consolidating them into one type of one production line - it helps the AI and also I believe helps players

The types I am considering amalgamating are

Beaufighter VIc's
Beaufighter X's
Commonwealth Ventura's
and maybe
Commonwealth Kittyhawk I's

Not going to touch the Spit Vc's because they arrive at very different times but may look at the Spit VIII's

Would be a fair amount of work but rather than having 20 sub types based on nationality I got to 4 or 5 Commonwealth nationality pools which they all draw from with deeper pool densities in each type it only works where the types arrive for broadly the same time frame and are operational but we have chosen to assume the commonwealth P40's are not interchangeable ??

As its a fair amount of work and de-fragments some of the small air pools the CW face in critical types I wanted to test the water and get views ??

Good idea/bad idea waste of time - thoughts ??

e.g Australian Beaufighter X has a rate of 6 per month and RAF one 16 per month so would have one Beaufigher X with rate of 22 per month rather than two subtypes

That would be nice, and might help with some aircraft never arriving in thee pools due to low replacement rates.

K Hawk I - IV
Spit VIII

Also added some late war upgrades for Dutch Sqns mostly to allow AI to still use them not intended for human player at all

Andy, Does this use the existing aei001-XX.dat files or are there some new ones I missed. (I was under the impression that the AI would not support/use new bases without a change to these files.)

It should be used in scen 33 for now to avoind other AI scripts interfering there is only one script for now I am focussing on 100% debugging that one before I start messing with variants

In time I will add some sensible variants mostly order of attacks etc rather than fukll on exploitation phase attacks

I thought is was actually fairly common in the beginning of the war for commonwealth and US units to be flying multiple versions of the same or similar aircraft just because of limited availability. P-39s/P400s for example and all kinds of P-40 variants. Not to mention wherever the unit was in the upgrade pecking order.

Almost done with the re write of the allied AI

Its ok on defence but will always struggle in Scen 1 in 43 as it doesnt have overwhelming assets until 44/45 but has to attack.

A difficult balancing act

I can fix the Ironman/Attack of Dorniers version to accomodate this and deal with it but in Scen 1 the AI struggles to effectivelly attack against a marginally competent player

It's an interesting challenge

Andy, I finally have a chance to look at your new scenario 1.
There are a couple of the new bases that have fort levels set to 6
Locations 1632 to 1635, 1642, and 1643

I've now played through to late September 1942, working round the map.

Burma, the IJA is hung up on the Sittang River, about 8 Divs attacking about 5 Divs, the IJA cant get enough strength but the AI wastes effort in amphib attacks on Pegu (which I defeat), Rangoon (which I cant clear) & Akyab (which was beaten off). The Allies only commit units which are bought out so its a battle at the end of a rubbish LOC with below average units, though some are now getting toward elite ratings.

Malaya took the AI until March to clear, I fought for central Malaya & Temuloh even held past Singapore.
Palamebang lasted till late April, battles for about 5 weeks and ZERO damage to the refineries!
Java fought valiantly, Batavia falling in late April.
I intercepted an amphip TF in the early weeks, I wonder if this cascaded down to affect the occupation of the DEI.

North of Darwin I prepared to ship AIF reinforcements to Ambon, an IJN TF showed up so I dropped them on Saumlaki. They got forts up to 2 before the IJA arrived and after a 2 mth battle finally cleared the island. I have invested a lot of work in this area, running single ship TF into Darwin to supply the 6 & 7 Aus Infantry Divs who marched north. In early August I had concentrated 2 x USN CV & 2 x RN CV plus support to land these Divisions on Lautern & Dili, next wave landed 14, 16 & 23 British Brigades on Koepang. The IJN did some effective raids using TF made up of 2 CA & support plus what may be a solid mini KB. While I think this is safe there is still more action to come in this area.

SWPAC has been quiet, I didnt do much in New Guinea so the IJA has occupied PM, Guadalcanal but little more.

The Gilberts has seen more action, on the same day I too Timor I landed 4 Rgts og Marines on Mili, fairly easy attack but the AI built up a decent reply. 3 weeks later I landed 4 more RCT of the USA on Makin, 2 days later a substantial group of IJN CV appeared to the west so I moved back my transports and moved my 3 CV to a point closer to Mili. The IJN moved its CV to Kwajalein son was able to hit my carriers, 2 hits on Saratoga saw 45 sys pts damage. Again safe but still work to be done.

Pearl Harbor has seen a fair bit of action, 1 case of a Surf TF approaching from the west, and 2-3 cases with Surf, Air Combat & Trans TFs coming around the top of Midway and approaching from the North, happens often enough that my B17 at 15kft are experienced enough to get regular hits. They seem to get to about 8 hexes then retreat. Now all my WC-PH convoys get a 5-6 ship escort!!

KB raided Sydney in approx April, nothing much to hit at the time and my Ansons & Battles hid. A similar raid on Dutch Harbour took place in May.

So far its been good, a bit slower than vanilla though is that the game or the player??

OK. Maybe it's the concussion or old age, But, is this suppose to be Scenario 33 or do the files labeled 33 attach to scenario 1?....GP

Yeah, I saw post one. The reason I ask is the file doesn't seem to be unzipping into the scenario file correctly. I'm going to try again with a new DL....GP

Andy, I took a look at the files in the DL. One file I believe is missing.
scn033.

I DL'd 3 times, unzipped into the Scenario file. I have the other ten, but the scn033 is missing.

Other scenario's I have DL'd have this file.

Let me know what you think....GP

You extract it into your SCEN folder. When you fire up WitP:AE and start a scenario, look for it in slot 33.

Strange, obviously I'm missing something. Copied it twice to the SCEN folder. I see the 10 files in the folder. Go to scenario selection and see nothing in slot 33. Hmmm

I think this is an error that Andy needs to know about.

The download package is indeed missing a file "scn033.cmt" which contains a text string with the title to be displayed in the scenario load list.

It's not hard to make up but I have attached one for you.

Just unzip and copy the attached file into the scen directory along with the other 10 files. Scenario 033 will then appear on the scenario list.
