"Objective Burma" New storyline

Post by JeffroK »

Watched "Objective Burma" for the umpteenth time last night and wondered why Hollywood would produce something so inaccurate and unsympathetic to is major ally.

When 503 PIR was mentioned I thought of an alternate storyline.

Action takes place in New Guinea, where 503 PIR was actually based. Swap Stilwell for Macarthur, get rid of the "Gurkhas" and replace them with Papuan Infantry Scouts (who could speak a few words of English). An Aussie commando could add to the mix.

Mission is similar, take out RADAR station which would detect the fly in of 503 PIR & Aussie Arty into the Nadzab strip. This could put at jeopardy the air transport of 7th Australian Division and amphib landing of 9th Australian Div in the offensive to take Lae.
In the end, hold a hill overlooking the strip which must be held or else....

At least get some historical accuracy into the script.

(Maybe CBI was als a "forgotten army" and Stilwell wanted some propaganda spread his way.)o

I haven't watched that in a long time. But IIRC, it was filmed during the war (1945) and was intended to be a US morale booster. So I don't think they were going for strict accuracy.

Or any accuracy. Did they even do accuracy back then. Hell they have a hard time with it today. Recall the movie that shan't be named.[:D]

Most accurate records would have been highly classified at the time. So the most they had to go on is what the government told them and disinformation was a part of the propaganda war, so false info would be expected.

Who watches Errol Flynn movies for accuracy? Another good US morale boosting film is Wake Island (1943). I forget who was in it.

Why can't you say Pearl Harbor? It is a important US base so it has significant relevance in this game. [&:]

In truth it stands for a certain cinematic "effort" whose only redeeming quality is Kate Beckinsale.

Its The Movie That Shall Not Be Named (TMTSNBN) as it was soooo bad its very name cannot be uttered. For this reason no one who frequents this forum would say Pearl Harb..

Back on "Objective Burma" - It was always my sense that it was inspired by the real 503rd operation at Nadzab - 503rd captures a jungle airstrip then reinforcements follow. It might be the facts were scrambled for security reasons and to make a small group (especially star Flynn) the focus of the story - more audience empathy and cheaper to film. Also by the time the movie was made, Burma was in the headlines more than Nadzab. I don't think the reference to the 503rd was a coincidence. If you could run the Hollywood conveyor belt in reverse I suspect the Nadzab operation was at the front end.
