I like it, it is a good start. The ocean has to be changed though, something to differentiate it from the shoreline and land tiles.

I like it! Thanks for adding the river names, that's a nice touch. Mountain ranges would be cool too.

There is no way to change the selection hex outline? That has always bugged me...

Sorry, just noticed that you had already cleaned up the selection graphic. Wondering why you didn't use it in the example maps?

yeah... frank hunter could drop by once in a while...
the pfe-engine would also be nice for a north-africa campaign, i guess...

i made the new (sicily )selector hex thinner and changed the color to red...
it's still 'cleaner' than the original though.

Re: mountain ranges, I guess there is only one really, but it has a number of pieces. You could also include the higher peaks and mountain passes...

On the selection hex, why do you think it doesn't actually follow the hex outline?

[...]I like PFE (and Frank Hunters PC games) because he uses a full map image and not tiled images for his maps. I did a mod for his Guns of August game that he really liked and subsequently included in a patch. He then contacted me about doing the map from start to finish for PFE. He has some more projects in the works that he's asked me to look in to and I'd be happy to help him out again.

Nothing planned from me, I haven't heard from Frank in some time (I hope all is ok with him!).

I really like what you have here Chemkid, that's a very clean and nice look!

The great thing about Frank's games, as I mentioned on Grogheads, is that he uses single images for the map and no "tiles". Tiles are the worst to work with and always looks, well, computer-gamish. With this game (and his others), it's a cinch to make your own version of the map just how you like it given a little (or a lot in Chemkids case) of graphic art talent!

Very nice work, gives a very good 'real map' look, I like the choice of colours, the pale sea colour matches with actual maps. I will be using this as the vanilla was a bit dark. Thanks

The more I use this, the better it looks, hoping that you might be able to do the mainland.

Thank you for this work, I know that graphics should not detract from a good game, but a great looking map adds so much more to the immersion into the subject. The Italian campaign was all about terrain and a more realistic map helps a lot. I have seen comments in the forums, of people being put off by the look of the game, which is a shame because this title is well worth a look and the availability of this map option should help.

while having fun doing the labels for the italy map...

i would like to make the temperature change on the wintermap as smooth as possible and came up with this idea:
(a slight shift in tone to a cooler color in the upper half of the map should do the trick... what do you think? tbh, i'd like to stay away from snow, ice and winterstorms... )

cheers!

Better and better, it is the subtlety of your map mods which makes them so good. I have used different maps in other games, between winter and summer phases, so it is a nice effect.

I would vote for this option, rather than cartoon snow and rain, but perhaps more emphasis on snow in the mountains.

Can't wait to see it in the game, except see PM.

edit: i updated the overview map - if you liked the sicily overview you'll like this, too!

please feel free to download my italy map for piercing fortress europa.
it's a work in progress - mountain ranges are still missing but everything else is already included.
i don't want you to wait until i finish the map... it's good enough to be played with, i guess...

thanks to brian for his feedback!!

the files should be copied into the graphics folder of pfe. please backup your original files!
for a smoother look, please download and install the 'port.bmp' from my sicily map.
also, my counters work very well together with the maps of sicily and italy:

--> Counters Thread <--

--> Sicily 1943 v2 Post <--

that's all folks! please stay tuned...

best regards
robert

Thanks for the final map set, using your preview map in-game has been a revelation, the immersion and 'feel' of the game has improved enormously. The whole package, including hex mask and counters mod are magnificent and has lifted a veil on a great game.

It now looks as good as it plays.

Next project is to lighten (grey) and reduce the opacity of the Hexmask to match the lighter tone of the new map, have been experimenting, but will look at it more when I get back.
