[FIXED B708] AAW patrol aircraft attacking ground targets

Post by Yokes »

USSR side, a group of fighters on an AAW patrol mission appear to be trying to attack a SAM using guns, but they never actually shoot at them. They just descend to low altitude and circle the SAM site. This does not end well for them.

I have them on an AAW patrol mission, "engage opportunity targets" and "strafing" doctrines are set off. Seems like they should not be doing this.

Yokes is this the right save game?

If so could you tell me what fighters and what SAM site?

Thanks!

This should help. MiG-23s circling over a radar station.

Just check and looks like the mission ROE Engage Opportunity targets is set to: Yes engage any contacts. This is the issue.

Weird. I clicked on the "doctrine" tab at the right side of the screen, and it says it is off.

Can you please confirm you see the same thing?

I'm glad this is something I can easily fix.

Yes, and the two don't agree. Why? The mission has the doctrine "engage opportunity targets" set to "yes", but the group of aircraft on that mission are saying that they inherited a doctrine of "engage opportunity targets" of "no". However, their behavior says they are engaging opportunity targets.

So I understand the reason why they are trying to attack the radar station, but I'm trying to point out the doctrine information for the group is not being reported correctly.

The mission ROE always overrides the group's. That has always been my understanding. The group's ROE is there so you'll know what the group ROE is if they are not on a mission. That has always been my assumption. Not sure how inheritence plays into it, but that might have an impact as well.

Its not a player controlled side in this case so where you're looking isn't really relevant is a human never would. Its best to just set the ROE at the mission level. If it still doesn't fix your issue let me know.

I agree they should match but nobody should be hung by their toenails for it mostly for the above reason.

Thanks!

Mike,

Sorry if you got the impression I was trying to hang anyone by their toenails!

So you are saying the discrepancy between the mission doctrine and the group's doctrine is caused by the side being non-playable? If so, then I apologize for taking your time.

PS: I absolutely love the changes in V1.07. You guys are fantastic!

No just saying it doesn't matter as the AI would never click on the group setting to change it.Same is true with the human editor as the planes are landed at start so would be likely to use the Mission level ROE. You understand that right?

I did say it should match.

That ok?

It would be useful at some time to show the general processing order of the various levels of ROE. Same could be said for the WRA.
In this I mean which one takes preference:
The order I think it goes in is
Side -> Mission -> Group -> Unit.

So if I don't make any changes, the Unit should reflect the ROE of the Side (or if on a mission, Mission).
In actual situations where ROE is being used, it will always be the Unit ROE (as it would have flowed down from some upper ROE unless player changes it).
This has been my working theory anyway[:D]

---
Another outlier is the options in Attack (ignore path, etc) which are also part of the ROE. Not sure where these fit in the overall ROE preferences.[&:]
