Another update rolls in for War in the West!

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West, the huge wargame that was released at the end of last year, has received yet another update. Patch 1.00.11 brings a great deal of changes and balance fixes, that create even more historical gameplay than this extraordinary detailed game could already bring to the table. In addition, the patch boasts a handful of AI improvements, as well the implementation of many new aircraft photos and unit symbols.

The patch can be downloaded and installed automatically by launching the updater tool. The manual download can be found here.

•New Features and Rule Changes
1. Victory Points (section 25.1.1) – The City Control Point (CCP) Date adjustment divisor was incorrectly stated in the manual to be 4,6,8, and 12. In 1.00.00 it was actually 6,9,12, and 18. In version 1.00.08 it was accidentally changed to 2,6,9 and 12, but in this version it has been corrected back to the intended release values of 6,9,12, and 18.
2. Support units and Refit (section 7.4) – The rules were incorrect and support units were not considered to be in refit mode. Now, support units that are set to supply priority 4 will be treated as if they were in refit mode.
3. Air Base Nationality Switch (section 8.3.4.1) - When airbases switch nationality they will now retain the air base’s supply priority.
4. Isolated units that are very low on supplies will suffer additional fatigue and damage to their elements during the logistics phase.
5. CR screen (section 26.2.4.1) - Added the number of pilots/crews to the Air Group tab of the CR screen (near the top of the screen in the list of ready/damaged/reserved aircraft, etc.).
6. Added many new aircraft photos and unit symbols.
7. Changed air maintenance so it repairs aircraft damaged during current day's training missions.
8. Slightly decreased daily pilot fatigue recovery rate.
9. Reset cursor to arrow during the folder selection dialog.
10. Editor - REDUCE REINFORCEMENT DELAYS function will now reduce delays of air groups.
11. Improved the AI to keep it from making impossible moves of units out of nearly closed pockets and from teleporting units around Sardinia and Corsica.
12. Additional changes to the AI in Battleground Italy to try to ensure the Allies invade Italy at some point, even when Messina is being held by the Germans.
13. Improved AI so that it will not attach US fighter units to Bomber Command.

•Bug Fixes
1. Game crashed during the German AI turn. Fixed.
2. Allied airbases in England occasionally changed their HQ attachment during the logistics phase without player input for no reason. Fixed.
3. Broken down divisions could build up even when some of the units were on ships. Fixed.
4. Incorrect TOE% calculation and display showing for a stug brigade. Fixed.
5. Rails near Marseille are not showing connected to the supply grid even though they are connected with the port in Marseille. Fixed.
6. HQs with a delay (not yet in the game) are showing up as available when changing HQ attachment and units can be attached to these HQs not yet in the game. Fixed.
7. Elements with a load cost of 9999 were causing inflated replacement needs in the logistics report. Fixed.
8. Resting air groups could fly air training missions. Fixed.
9. Fixed typo on metrics screen ""TOTAL AVF"" -> ""TOTAL AFV""
10. Fixed air group CR functions bugs when sorting is on.
11. The losses shown by turn for the Eastern Front in the logistics report were incorrect. Fixed.
12. Construction units were not assisting expansion of various airfields, some because of errors in the routine that assigns construction units to repair, and others because the routine would not send units to an airbase not on a rail line. Fixed.
13. Withdrawing Allied units below 75% of TOE that were placed frozen back on the map were receiving movement points each turn. Fixed.
14. Units moving over ferry hexes containing any enemy interdiction could suffer unintended catastrophic damage to their ground elements. Fixed.
15. Allied army and corps HQs were being blocked from changing HQ attachment to any HQ greater than 10 hexes away from the unit. There should be no limit on attachment range. Fixed.
16. A HQ moving at sea lost 13000 men when a transport was sunk (due to not yet arrived units attached to the HQ also taking damage). Fixed.
17. Swap outs and upgrades of equipment did not require freight points (just required to be in supply). Fixed.
18. German HQ retreat moves onto a hex with an Allied unit (caused by bad map data, two German airfields in the same hex). Fixed.
19. Germans received double APs early in a campaign 43 game before they qualified for the doubling. Fixed.
20. Air transporting an airborne regiment to a friendly airbase ended up killing the unit as it "scattered" and died as if it was an airdrop. Fixed.
21. Italian unit in Sardinia did not unfreeze when Allies land within 3 hexes of the unit. Fixed.
22. Assigning a construction unit to a fort unit does not work properly if the construction unit is temporarily on the map at the time of the assignment. Fixed.
23. Editor - Fixed air group air base can't get set after setting air HQ.
24. Editor - Fixed navigation from air group detail screen to editor's air group tab.

No. I think it just declares it non-beta.

Woot! Thank you. I've taken a bit of a break from the game, but look forward to update!

quote:

ORIGINAL: Surtur01

... Rule Changes

For those with the hard copy manual finding and keeping track of changes to it, especially for these who buy the game in future when these changes have been applied perhaps many months before, is going to be difficult.

Apologies if I have missed it, but could we have a sticky thread or a downloadable document with a consolidated list of changes to the hard copy manual, listed in section order?

Pretty please

I just print each version change and put it in the front of my (printed) manual. I may go through with a highlighter and highlight any rules in the book that are changed to get me to refer to the readme.

The updater should be available from the laucher if you have already updated at least once. It was omitted in the release version by error but delivered with first patch.
Otherwise start the update.exe from within the WitW installation folder to get the latest version.

A new official (non-beta) update is available via the update option from the game launcher or directly from the FTP at ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/WarInTheWest/WarInTheWest-UpdateComp-v1013.zip

Okay I'm a bit confused - where does V1.00.11 stand as compared to the 1.00.21 beta?

Thanks

As version 1.00.11 it is the official release and an earlier version than 1.00.21 beta. The second release is, as it says, a beta release and may include bugs or other stuff that is not fully tested as of yet. Version 1.00.11 is an official release is considered to be a stable version and is what is now downloaded by the server and such.
