I've started this game playing as the Allies. The fow/fom, lock hq support, and East Front box are on. I've set the Axis AI to 110 in each category.

The first turn is pretty much set up for the Allies, but I choose to set up my air directives manually. At first setting all the directives is very confusing and the AI does an okay job, but learning to set them manually is important to getting bombs where you need them. I've set my air directives to help cover my initial landing, and the landings I plan on turn 2. On turn 1 with the planes in England I usually won't bomb to far into the Reich, but get my fighters closer to the coast so that on turn 2 they will be ready for escort duty. My normal strategy in the air war in Germany is to use all my bomber groups to take out a specific area. Night bombers hit certain targets and the day bombers other targets. Once it's bombed out, I'll move on to fresh areas. I don't like to fly unescorted missions either. It's never worth the bomber losses.

My main objective in the Med. is to cover my invasion beach's, take out the ferry and ports, and interdict any reinforcements headed south. This map shows all my air directives in the Med. for this turn.

T1 Ground
I've reset all the British amphib. invasions to the boot of the main land. Against the AI it's a little risky, but I want to knock Italy out of the war as soon as possible. I've also reset one of my US amphib. to invade Sardinia since all those units will turn if I successfully invade the Italian mainland. I need to secure Sardinia and Corsica as soon as I can so that I will be able to invade further up the coast. I've also consolidated my airborne divisions and assigned them new drop zones. There are not enough transport for both divisions on the same turn, so one will be dropped on T2 and the other on T3. The US drop will be on Sardinia to assist there, and the British drop will support the landings on the mainland.

The only invasion forces hitting Sicily this turn will be II Corps units. All the Italian units will hopefully be gone on T2 and II Corps can take the island without a fight. 5th Army will follow on behind II Corps/7th Army. I want to capture and repair all the larger ports on Sicily so that I can start to set up my next invasion. I get rid of some weak corps commanders to. One last thing I do on this turn is to turn on auto upgrade for all air groups, turn all the empty airfields to 0 priority, and set Malta Air Cmd and Tactical AF to priority replacements since they will bear the brunt of the losses this turn. If the troops can't get beans n'bullets, then they can't make dead Germans for Patton.

This screenshot shows my invasion beach's for Sicily and the Boot.

My air coverage in the Med. is used to cover the invasions, while RAF Bomber Cmd. destroys HI and Fuels in the Rhur, and 8th Air Force is taking out Fuel, Oil, and Sub pens around Hamburg.

II Corps successfully took the beach's, and there was one Italian brigade engaged, which quickly retreated. 5th Army will be following onto the beach's and Sicily should be mostly mopped up by turn 3, except for Messina.

Not shown on this screen is the invasion of Sardinia, next to it's largest port, and I've dropped the entire 82nd to support that invasion since I'm not using air cover on Sardinia.

I've moved all of 8th Army for the invasion of the Boot. There are usually significant reinforcements and there's no guarantee that all my units will make it ashore. Next turn I have the British AB Division set to land at the choke point behind any reinforcements heading to the mainland invasion beach's. By using the entire Division in one hex, it's chances of surviving till relieved are increased. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't use this against a human opponent.

Pre-invasion.

T2 Post Invasion. I've moved several fighter groups from Tac Air onto the invasion beach's of Sicily and naval patrol craft. Got to have the naval patrols to increase my interdiction levels near the invasions. I almost lost 1st Armored Division because my air coverage on Sicily was inadequate, naval and Air Superiority. 1st Armored is sitting under II Corps HQ in southern Sicily with a CV of 1 from going through a contested area.

Turn3

The Med. air is still covering the mainland invasion of Italy, while Bomber Command and 8th Air Force continue with their set targets till they are either done or if I see too many bombers getting chewed up.

One infantry division with the support of the 82nd AB land successfully onto Sardinia. I have a US armored division and 1st FF Corps set as a follow on units, and I use the Italian units that switched sides to cut the other German units off from their ports. These Italian units will withdraw on Aug. 21 turn, so use 'em or loose 'em. On Corsica I use only the Italian units until I have the port in Southern Sardinia captured and repaired enough to use. Then I will ship the FF Corps to mop up on Corsica before the Italian units withdraw. If I wait, I would probably have to waste time invading Corsica later.

II Corps is just securing Sicily. All the ports except Messina are allied now on Sicily, so I will start priority repairs on the ports and railways. I need all four ports on Sicily ready so that I can prepare for another invasion further into Italy. That's the reason I like to secure Sardinia and Corsica early so that I can expand the airfields and support an invasion all up and down the Italian west coast. 5th Army units come ashore and move towards Messina.

All my invasion beach's were taken by VIII Corps and XXX Corps from the 8th Army and the British AB Division landed at the choke point behind several German divisions. I hope the airborne troops will hold out long enough to be relieved and to capture a few of these divisions before they escape.

Turn 3 End

I managed to get all of the 8th Army units onto the beach's and XXX Corps on the west side of the boot caused two German divisions to retreat. My airborne unit could be in trouble with more reinforcements coming in from the north, depending on which units they are.

Turn 4 Air

No changes to the air war in Germany.

I've moved the bulk of the fighters of Coastal Command to the airfields in Southern Sardinia and naval air units I've spread out between all three invasion areas. If you want supplies to the beach's you have to keep the Allied Interdiction levels up. I don't have a pic of this, but you can access this feature in the map tab to see interdiction levels. I've received air reinforcements and after I placed them all, I always go to the air group tab and change their upgrade status to auto. I also check to make sure my airbases with aircraft have a supply priority greater than zero.

I move air groups onto Sicily and onto the airfields created by the invasion forces. I've set most of my TAC Air to unit and ports. The Strategic Grnd Support I've set to railway's and interdiction to try and slow the German units escape routes

Turn 4 Ground

Sardinia should be secure with in a turn or two and then the FF Corps can land at a port in Corsica to finish the German forces there off.

7th Army and 5th Army finish securing Sicily, while VIII Corps will move to relieve the airborne troops and to start reducing Reggio. XXX Corps will finish securing the beach head and try to contain the German units attempting to escape. Until I get some armored units up there, those German units will probably escape.

Turn 5

The Air War over Germany continues. Daylight bombing is way more effective than Night Bombing. I'm going to have to adjust the 8th Air Force so that they can finish off the Ruhr. The areas around Hamburg, fuel, oil, and sub pens are almost all at 100% damage so I can take a few turns to help Bomber Command finish off the Ruhr. Once this is finished I plan to start taking out aircraft and heavy industry next.

The Air War over Italy is slowly moving up the boot in support of 8th Army. The Axis units are conducting a good withdrawal from the boot with out allowing me to surround them. It appears all the axis units north of my line will escape for now. I'm still waiting on armored units to get to the front. One thing to mention is that two of the 3 defenders in Reggio Calabria moved out of the safety of the level 3 fort. Not sure why since they had no chance of taking my beach head.

7th and 5th Army are moving to the ports on Sicily to start prepping for another invasion, hopefully by mid October. Probably won't release my TF's for another turn or two so 7th and 5th Army will be cooling their heels. I do plan to take the armored divisions from 5th Army and assign them to 8th Army.

I should have the port in Cagliri soon. Then it will just be mopping up here and moving air units to the my new aircraft carriers, USS Sardinia and USS Corsica.

Turn 7

The Axis units escaped the trap on the boot. The Brigade that was in Reggio Calabria moved out of the level 3 fort on turn 6 and all three units were captured. Now that the ferry is open I will move the last two Naval TF's towards their invasion ports. The ports are small and will take until the middle or end of October to have enough prep points to invade.

Sardinia is being difficult being secured, while Corsica is easier than usual to take. I've already started to repair ports and upgrade airfields on Corsica.

Turn 8 Air

One thing I have noticed is that I've had to increase my bomber altitudes. Below 20k the daylight bombers were taking heavy flak casualties. Bomber Command I raised to 18k even though they weren't taking near the flak casualties that 8th Air Force was.

I've taken the Strategic Air Force and the Tactical Air Force and concentrated them in a two hex area to break out of the toe. My southern air forces are all committed to helping 8th Army break out of the boot. The picutre shows a lot of sorties, but most of those big numbers are recons.

Turn 8 New Invasion sites

I've selected my new invasion sites, and the British 6th Airborne will support the beach's closest to Rome. I'm hoping to get so far behind those axis units down south that I will have time to trap them down there. Depends on how much resistance I meet around Rome. My interdiction numbers around the new invasion beach's are rising and have made the seas neutral. Once Corsica is secure and the bases upgraded, I'll have control over the invasion beach's. My northern most invasion beach is going to be delayed a few turns and will embark from Corsica.

I'll start doing recon flights over the beach's next turn to see what I'm up against. I'll change targets so that the AI won't be too accurate about where to deploy. I try to set up this invasion to go off before November when the bad weather starts.

Turn 8 End

I don't normally gamble on attacks, but the units sitting on that mountain hex didn't have a realistic CV (wish I'd screen shot the attack) for just a PzG Division and a regiment so I conducted a Deliberate Attack and disloged them. I don't have units with enough MP's left to take the hex.

Turn 9

The air war in both the north and south are unchanged this turn. The picture below shows interdiction levels over sea and land around the front. I have moved air units to Corsica and have been expanding the airfields there. One note about 8th Air Force. My flak losses once I set their altitude above 20k went back down significantly. Over 200 crates saved and the crews are no longer calling Gen. Spaatz, Gen. Spaz! There doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference in hit rates at their new altitudes.

Axis forces are still withdrawing slowly from the boot this turn. I'm not sure if the slow withdrawal is by design or due to my interdiction. Maybe a little of both. They've ended this turn behind the Crati River which puts them out of reach for any significant attack this turn. I'm glad 6th and 7th British Armored Divisions are in the fight now. It makes pushing the axis line back and exploiting it a great deal easier until further up the peninsula of Italy. My only real push will be towards Taranto with 8th Army for now. I don't want to push the axis line to far north until I invade around Rome which is already set and prepping. I want the southern bases around the SE part of Italy for 15th Air Force to use. They will be in range of the Rumanian Oil fields from there. I've also started to swap out my P-40N's and P-47's air groups out in the Med. Air Force with the P-51B's for now. If I want escorts to Romania I need the longer range planes.

I did make one small mistake, which I've since corrected. I forgot to start expanding my small airfields on Sicily after I took them. I normally put my transport aircraft on them to fly supply to my front line units. This turn I resupplied my two advanced armor divisions finally, when I should have been doing this a couple of turns ago.

Turn 10

The map shows my Air Directives this turn for Italy. I've taken my recon planes off of Rome this turn because I want to know where all those axis unit pulled back to this time. My other Air Directives are set to interdiction to slow their withdrawal to the mountain line north of Naples. I have pretty much disbanded the Malta Air Force. I can transfer them to the Tactical Air Force and just create a 2nd Air Superiority Air Directive. Since I have plenty of fighters in Tactical Air Force now, I'm switching several squadrons to bombers. I have not flown any tactical or superiority missions over France or the Low Countries so far. I like to wait until the 2nd RAF Tactical and 9th Air Force get enough planes to conduct recon missions with plenty of escorts. I usually start once the bad weather starts to break in Feb. 44 and I still have time to change my mind on where exactly to invade from England.

Turn 10 Ground

I catch up to the axis ground forces behind the Crati River. 6th and 7th Armored bypass the river and conduct a hasty attack against the Herman Goering Div, which retreats. This should cause another withdrawal next turn since this line is broken and the axis units on the eastern coast are in danger of being cut off if they do not withdraw. The rail net is progressing fine, staying just behind the front. I do wish I could have just one more rail repair unit, because once I'm off the boot the rail repairs can get behind for awhile, and the 2nd rail repair unit is needed for the coming invasion.

Sardinia has been taking a little longer than usual and I think it was because the axis units didn't abandon the ports like they have in past games.

I do wonder why SU's cannot cross the ferry from Sicily to the boot of Italy. I have to move 5th Army across to the Boot to give 8th Army some SU's, which is on the Boot.

Turn 11

Not much has changed with the air war for now, so no directive changes needed, just adjusting the directive areas.

I've finally started to get reinforcements into the Med. First Indian Division landed at Crotone to support 8th Army. Most of my new reinforcements will be follow on forces for the planned invasion around Rome. My air forces are gaining interdiction points around Rome and soon several air fields on Corsica will be expanded. By the time the invasion goes in, I should have a comfortable interdiction level. I'd like to have Taranto and Foggia to before the invasion, but those are targets of opportunity and only if the axis run for their line north of Naples. I haven't really needed to create any new depots since I've been using the captured ports. Once I get into Italy north of Naples it becomes important to create depots close to the fighting.

Axis units appear to be moving farther north, only keeping some units in the passes between the mountains to slow my chase. Most of them will probably escape, but I should be able to bag a few once I hit open ground with my armored divisions. Now that most of those axis units are gone, I have about 3 new small air fields to use. Mostly I'll transfer the shorter ranged fighters into these airbases.

Turn 12

I've switched 8th Air Force to attacking oil and sub pens, to aircraft factories and fuel. I'm sure the Italian Luftflotte is feeling pretty used by now and I want to start taking out aircraft reinforcements as much as possible. I tried this tactic a few versions ago and if I start it now, by Christmas the Luftwaffe will not be flying very many air directive sorties anymore.

Axis forces in Italy created a new line of defense at the first set of mountains outside the Boot. Once again I attacked the Herman Goering Division, in a mountain hex, and they retreated. I had a unit with enough MP's to take the hex, and putting two more axis divisions in danger of being cut off. The other parts of this front are just pursuing at their leisure. It would take deliberate attacks to budge other parts of the axis front and I don't want them running north just yet. The invasion from Sicily is gaining prep points and seems on schedule for now, except for one TF having to wait on the securing of Sardinia. Sardinia has taken longer to take than I had planned since I wanted the units taking Sardinia for the new invasion. May have to do without a sixth invasion beach, or it will come in a couple weeks behind.

Turn 14

Turn 13 saw no significant changes on land, sea, or air. Axis forces at the top of the Italian Boot have put up a strong line there.

Turn 14-Hoping to receive some air reinforcements soon for the 2nd RAF and 9th Air Force. With the weather turning bad my Strategic Air will not be flying as many sorties. The weather in the Med. is not ever usually so bad that you can't fly most sorties. I'm still losing a lot of crates to operational losses. I've checked my group fatigue numbers, and they are all below 10%. I noticed the sharp increase in operational losses starting with version .40. So far my recon of the beach's around Rome appear empty. The picture shows the air directive options screen for RAF Bomber Command. Lots of red in the Ruhr. It will take construction units awhile to fix it all.

Turn 14 Ground

8th Army has been stalled out and is jockeying for position to get better attack odds. I may not be able to break out of this area till my invasion goes in north of here. Then it will be every German for himself!

Corsica and Sardinia are finally secured and construction on repairs and expanding air fields continues. I need those bases on Corsica expanded for the Tactical Air Force so they can cover my invasion in Italy and later on to cover the beach's in the South of France. I wasted a few turns worth of prep points trying to include the Ranger's and the SAS into the invasion. For some reason it would not allow me to assign these to the amphib. HQ's and I stacked them in the hex, which cost more prep points. I should still be able to invade on turn 17 or 18. 1st Army has become active in Britain. I changed a few leaders around, but my best ones are still in Italy.

One a historical event did happen, and I wish I had screen shotted it. Gen. George S. Patton's political rating improves to 7!!! I guess you can teach old dogs, new tricks.

Turns 15-21

There were several major developments, but not much to show on the maps. On turn 15 I turned 8th Air Force bombers to aircraft factories for now.

In the Med. I had started to attack the areas around Rome to soften up any defenses that my recon didn't show and to take some planes out. I was only going to have 5 invasion beach's, with a sixth two weeks later. On the ground there have been no significant gains. The axis units formed a good defensive line at the top of the Boot and has been frustrating 8th Army for weeks. North of Naples was starting to be the new axis line, recon showed.

On turn 17, with bad weather moving in, I attempted to launch my invasion around Rome. The German's had moved in several new air groups on their turn and had taken control of the seas around the invasion site from me. Over the next few turns I chew up the Italian Luftwaffe, but cannot regain interdiction control around Rome. On turn 19 I decide to shift the entire invasion further north where it will be closest to Corsica. From the picture it's obvious that 8th Army is making very slow progress. I've never attempted an invasion this far north in Italy. I'll be interested to see how it goes. So far I have chewed up over 800 Axis planes on the ground. I guess the AI really doesn't want me to invade there.

Turn 23

Axis air units in Italy finally pulled back to the north of Rome. Most of the air groups are empty if the recon reports are correct. On turn 22 I moved the bulk of the Tactical Air Force onto Corsica to make sure I had control of the area around Piombino, and to reach those axis air units that pulled back. The weather had me worried, but it looks like I will make the invasion this turn.

The units going ashore all have the best support units I can give them. I set the invasion to cover a larger area than I normally would. I'm hoping with all the units the axis have down south, that they won't have enough to contain me in all directions. My main goal once ashore is to cut the peninsula off and trap as many units as I can down below my lines. Most will get evacuated, but I'll bag a few. The picture shows my new invasion sites.
