Battle AAR

Post by budd »

2nd battle of the Mcensk campaign the first battle was a minor defeat.

Not much time today so just a screen of my setup. After getting ripped by the KV's in the first battle i thought about massing everything but went another way. I placed the 88's where they have the best LOS. All the infantry are riding on tanks on the left. On the left i'll send the lighter tanks out to spot and advance on either side of the road, depending on how things go i might split my force on the left and send half EERRRRRR more left [arrow] just depends. With the right advancing across the open i'll pincer the town at the first flag. I'm sure there are some T-34's and probably KV's out there waiting so we will adjust on the fly. Question: is there anyway to see what forces you have coming on map in future turns?

Here's the setup screen. What do you think?

Orders before turn 1.

I picked targets for the 88's. On the left i sent the light tanks out on an advance order and the heavies with a bound order, mistake because the heavies overtook them during the turn. On the right i gave targets to my heavies and sent the light tanks forward on an advance order.I plotted smoke to hit behind the BT-7's and hit start

Moments after start my 88's open up. 1 scores a hit on a BT-7 and destroys it, the other shot falls short.

So i'm up to turn 6 Here's the story.

Stupid,Stupid,Stupid,......what the hell was i thinking about advancing up the left side of that road......idiot[8|] The advance on the right went pretty well not so much on the left. I start to advance on the left and on the replays i see shells flying across my position from the left woods but nothing seen yet. I keep moving up and the fire from the woods on the left keeps coming...i lose 1 light tank, so i keep some tanks advancing and others doing area fire to try to suppress what i find out are 2 ATG's . As i move up on the left small arms fire starts firing at me, so far the riders on my tanks have no casualties. The fire from the left keeps coming and i cannot get a clean LOS to the ATG's in the woods to my left, now as i advance i'm also taking fire from the front. So it's time to adjust the plan. I start pulling everything from the left side of the road up the hill and over to the right side of the road, i spend 2 turns reorging everything on the left and lose one more light tank on the switch from the left to the right all the while still taking fire from the center which are more ATG's. On the right i'm pivoting left and headed for the 1st flag in the town, taking fire from a few ATG's on what turns out to look like a ring of ATG's. I lose 1 light tank on the right. I did manage to take out 1 ATG in the ring and 2 more BT-7's no sign of anything else but infantry [foxholed in the woods], ATG's and BT-7's

Reinforcements have arrived...yippee more tanks. The advance on the right is on it's own for right now...i see some question marks in town....so something is there. I'm pretty much done reorging on the left and about to continue the advance. I may just keep pushing up the map on the left and use the reinforcements to help with the 1st flag if needed. I need to put some fire on the ring of ATG's because the fire to my right advance is picking up and smoke in the center ain't going to last forever. I have arty....105's[4] which just got cooled off after the smoke mission and nebelwerfer, i was hoping to save the arty until i advance on the 2 flags in the town on the left but with that ring of ATG's and the smoke clearing in the center i may not have that luxury.

Time for turn 6 orders......

Up to turn 10

i have been pushing forward on the left. On the right I have grabbed the center VP and i am clearing the town.
The advance on the left has been taking fire from foxholes with infantry and AT infantry. A lot of my tank riders have dropped off and are heading for the tree's to engage the enemy with tank support to assist. I thought about stopping some tanks to pick up the riders but i am nervous about losing more tanks, 1 more light tank went down on the left so the tanks keep moving. I'm bringing up the new arriving units and just had 5 more tanks show up, they all will be pushing up the left side. The yellow arrows are infantry movement, except for tank riding there walking. I'm bringing up some infantry to occupy the center VP . The tanks will clear the town and then post themselves on the white dotted line to provide fire support when i attack the 2 left flags. The smoke has cleared and i have been taking fire from the back center...but not much.

The plan is too keep pushing forward on the left and keep bringing up the late units. I will be plotting Arty on the 2 left VP's soon, hoping to damage and suppress the ring of ATG's. Looking over the map the back center VP appears to have a row of gun pits guarding it. Forward HO..

2 more houses to clear, then moving the tanks to a fire line to provide support for the attack on the left VP and ring of ATG's. You can see my only casualties so far are 4 light tanks. You can see overall map progress on the mini map.

Bringing up the infantry to occupy the VP, i think i got all the houses clear for their approach. I just don't have any transport for the late arriving infantry.

Question is there a report while playing that tells you what is arriving on what turn?

Sorry - no report while playing, though you can check the scenario briefing and it may appear there(clip board button on the HUD ).

Thanks!

I'm done with turn 12 now and the damage is starting to add up for my forces ..... note to self "USE MORE DAMN SMOKE" ... you'd think i would of learned this by now. I'm still bringing up the late arriving units and except for 1 unit the center VP is clear. My infantry on the left are heading toward the tree's or suppressed in open ground after getting forced off the tanks. My artillery is dropping on the ring of gun pits guarding the upper left VP's . I've lost all my light tanks and 2 heavy tanks plus 2 squads of infantry.

This immobilized tank supporting the infantry clearing the foxholes on left. The crew is staying in the tank even while taking ATG fire.

Moving up, the infantry get forced off the tanks under ATG fire, I send them toward the left tree's to help clear the foxholes.
