Tank battle simulation. T-62 vs Leopard 1A2

Post by Alex1812 »

I want to see the ability of Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm to simulate the tank battle. Here is the English version of my result. Original material (in Russian) you can find here.

Initial conditions

Initial conditions are the following: flat open terrain, visibility 10 kilometres, Soviet T-62 tank battalion vs Leopard 1A2 battalion.

Image
Situation at 08:00

The standard German battalion has 41 tanks and to balancing the forces I delete two tank platoons from here. So we have 33 German tanks vs 31 Soviet.

T-62 vs Leopard 1A2

Lets compare our tanks. T-62 has a larger protection value, but Leopard has the advantage of speed.

The guns compare is not so simple. Larger caliber of the Soviet U-5T guns (115mm vs. 105mm German L7) provides greater explosive power, but it has less penetration values: 15 AP and 29 HEAT for U-5T vs 18 AP and 32 HEAT for L7. Maximum range of fire are 5000m fot both guns, but this value is not represent the actual situation. Effective range is significantly lower - only 1650m. German tank is equipped with the fire control system and the stabilizer with level 6, the Soviet fire control system has level 3, and stabilizer - level 4. Additional advantages of Leopard are the stereoscopic rangefinder, additional turret armor and larger number of shells.

The simulation results
At 08:00 battalion of T-62 deployed to the front began to move forward. At 8:19 Soviet crews found the German tanks at distance of 2500-3000m. German opened fire at 08:20 from the distance of 2500m and immediately destroy one T-62 from the 2nd tank company. T-62 started firing a minute later with the distance of 2400m, but they have no hits.

Image
Situation at 08:20

At 8:22 the distance is 2000m and another T-62 from 3rd tank company was destroyed. The Soviet crews also can destroy one Leopard.

At 8:23 the distance decreased to 1700m and both sides have the large number of hits.

At 8:26 the distance decreased to 1000-1500m. By this time 5 Soviet and 3 German tanks were lost.

Situation at 08:26

German tanks reach the victory point. By this time the distance decreased to 500-1000m and all side have the large losses. Soviet 2nd tank company lost 4 T-62 one by one and began retreating.

Soviet 1st and 3rd companies moved forward at 500m - the enemy's mixed. At 8:31 1st company came under heavy fire from the flank and lost all tanks.

Image
Situation at 08:31

Only Soviet 3rd tank company continues to fight. This company lost 4 T-62 and destroyed 6 Leopard during several minutes.

At 8:36 the battle was ended. It continues only 16 minutes. During this time 9 T-62 were destroyed and 14 were damaged. The German side lost 11 Leopard as destroyed vehicle and 11 as damaged.

In general it looks like both side has equivalent combat power. Leopards began shooting and hitting earlie, but then the also have significant losses.
