Marshall vs Russian Heel FOG OF WAR
it is 17 January 1942
My opponent is very slow in his progress, I still hold Manila and Clark field, and counter attacked north.
Singapore is still firmly in allied hands, without being pressured very hard, other then air attacks.
I have defended Fiji and have build up bases at Pago and Suva, with fighters and dive-bombers, and Air HQ
Christmas island is firmly set, with troops, engineers and has now completed level 6 airbase.
It was going to well for the allied forces, where are these large chucks of troops and ships?
then it hit me, there is only one prize japan will delay the taking of the DEI oil fields, and that is PH.
I currently have 50.000 troops (8000 are frontline troops) and around 75 fighters and similar number of bombers available
He will hit PH at any turn now, my thoughts are, are the defenses enough to withstand the onslaught?
I have a carrier force nearby to assist in the defense, and 4 Battleships, 6 light cruisers and several destroyers on location.
I am hurrying in the 8th marine regiment that was positioned at Christmas island (original it was from LA I think) but htat needs at least 4 turns to arrive
supplies are abundant of course at PH.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I'd be more scared he would land at Karachi in the next few turns. [:D]
RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
Maybe hes just cautious and methodical? For fighting a long war its important for Japan to gain control of the oil sources(Miri, Tarakan, Balikpapan and most importantly Palembang) while not losing too many troops early on. One invasion gone bad might see thousands of troops sunk aboard transports.
Have you counted his units? Have you seen 3rd, 53rd or 54th Divisions yet? What does he have on PI? Where are the Imperial Guards? There is surprisingly little troops Japan has to work with, they are just in good shape(100/100 or close), well positioned, concentrated and mostly unrestricted early on. More than you have for sure(outside of China any way) but not overwhelming masses. Japan can take any single place it wants early in the war but she cant take every place, and just 1 or 2 good punches back might delay the IJ for long.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I agree with Erkki ... Singers and PI are interesting ... but the DEI is the real goal. Does he have the oil centers? Palembang? Balikpapan? Mili? Medan?

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
PH is a stupid target IMO.
It has no real resource value and it is almost impossible to hold for the Japanese. If they choose to try the Allies can simply go around it and leave it alone. Unless it is part of an invasion of the WC which is crazy as well there is not enough reason to go for it unless the Allied player has left it almost completely undefended.

If he actually plans on attacking PH I would not risk losing the 8th marine regiment at this time.
What is important is your AV value, the number of forts you are behind and such.
If it was my battle I would set all my fighters on CAP 80 - 100% 0 range. I would put the battleships and other surface combat task forces in Pearl Harbor set at reaction 6 hexes to hopefully kill his troop transports and/or bombardment forces inbound.
At this point he can use the KB to pretty much deny any area to you. If he actually did attack the harbor with his carriers he should lose a lot of planes and good pilots.
If he does manage to take PH then you can pin a good number of his forces there to defend.
RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I have never heard of "Russian Heel". Is he a brand new player? If so, he could be overwhelmed by the game and just
not know what to do or how to put it all together. Amphib operations are tricky if you have never organized them before.
It would not hurt to ask your opponent if he is having any difficulty with the game just now. If he really is Russian, perhaps
there are language issues? The acronyms in the game give fits to newbies who speak English fluently, and must be doubly hard for
those who do not.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I have seen the imperial guard unit at Pegu
In the phils I am actually fighting back, and liberating bases towards north of bataan.
DEI is untouched, I have patrols flying to look out for fleet movements
Karachi seems impossible to reach while my patrols cover the DEI and Singapore area.
Suva is build up to level 4 airbase and has 145 air support, and 4 fighter sqn and 3 DB and 1 TB on it
Russian Heel is an American living in Russia and he told me he played a lot in the older games, and is now in a PBEM game in 1943 with another player as well
he teaches English in st Petersburg. he is a pretty descent guy and I must say our email contact has been funny with news reels and operational aftermaths.
I have stationed my main battle fleet 5 hexes in the rear of PH, waiting to react to any incoming.
My carrier force is stationed 9 hexes from PH, in reserve, and I can put my air groups on PH itself if needed, to form a unsinkable carrier for the battle, then retreat my carrier force until the battle is over.
I am at level 2 fort, trying to get a level 3 in before he lands.
I have an assault value of 556, and the 8th marine regiment is arriving next turn in support.
I Agree that for japan DEI and Singers is the main goal, that is why I am confused in his intensions
Karachi seems way out of reach for him now, singers is in allied control and DEI as well, airgroups are fully operational, and I am actually bombing ports in Borneo with them.
its impossible for the Japanese to sneak undetected past the DEI and move to Karachi now
in my opinion, to take Karachi you need singers early on in the game, that means taking the mersing gambit move, then steamroll into singers, and head for Karachi.
What other viable target can there be, but PH to delay so much time, underman Phil area, that you actually have a allied force pushing the imperial forces back.
where are these inf div.
I have spotted the 4th inf div on Rabaul.
so basically the imp guard unit is fighting at Pegu (and not breaking the allied lines, they are holding)
the 4th inf div is at Rabaul, recon indicates 19 units stationed at Rabaul, PM is mined and under constant air attack.
I actually have spotted an CVE and CVL to appear briefly near Ambon 3 turns ago, but it left the area within a turn without launching strikes.
I damaged the KAGA and 2 battleships, at the battle of Fiji around Christmas time up to the 7th of January.
I also sunk 3 CA, 1 CL and 2 destroyers, while losing a BB and 3 CA and 2 CL and 7 destroyers.
I think it the Kaga was damaged lightly and would be operational after a month in dock

My latest news reel
January 14th 1942
The allied newsreel is bringing you the latest news in the pacific. Newspaper costs 10 cents, and all revenue will be converted to war bonds.
Operation PANDA
Operation Panda was started with the goal to expel the imperial Japanese forces from the cities of Sinyang and Ichang and to test their resolve on the Chinese battle ground.
Although badly equipped and with low morale and low on supply the Chinese forces managed to achieve all objectives within a week, ahead of timetables set by allied command.
The operations where led by the 2nd and 26th Group Army HQ, who fought bravely alongside the frontline troops.
The Japanese forces where expelled and suffered over 40% casualties in both battles.
The operation has been a great success, even under constant bombing of the enemy air force, the Chinese troops manage to secure the cities, and where received with flowers and fanfare parades on the war torn streets of Sinyang and Ichang
Allied command was surprised with the ease the Japanese troops were expelled and state that operation Panda will be extended, with new objectives set, in the light of the recent progress and Japanese losses in the area.
Russia is looking at the battle reports and performance of the Japanese empire on large land base battles on the Chinese mainland, and are assessing if operation BEAR is possible.
The Chinese area of operations have been positive so far, and allied command is looking at the possibility to launch operations towards Korea as a possible platform for bombers in 1943-44.
Large amounts of Japanese forces surrendered to the chinese 26th Army, after the capture of SINYANG.
Operation OUTPOST
Operation OUTPOST has now come to a conclusion.
Operation outpost had the goal in developing of the FIJI, SAMOA and LINE Islands into sustainable defensive bases with limited air cover.
Allied command announced that the progress on the LINE islands have been most speedy in particular.
It is expected that 4 engine bomber will be able to use the base within days.
The Fiji islands have been defended with success and reinforcements have been delivered to the bases, and more are expected.
The redeployment of the ABDA HQ and 2 air HQ to the south east pacific region has greatly improved the airpower and support in that region.
Due to the results, the losses suffered during the battle of FIJI are deemed “acceptable”, as it removed the enemy KB from the area, while multiple high value transports where on route within 15 hexes.
Operation Outpost on film
OPERATION HEDGEHOG
Allied command has revealed it is currently executing operation Hedgehog.
It refuses to reveal any details, other than the operations was started after assessing the deployment of Japanese forces in the area of operations.
Forces preparing operation HEDGEHOG
Operation HUSKY
Allied command has revealed it is currently executing operation HUSKY.
It refuses to reveal any details, other than the operations was started after assessing the deployment of Japanese forces in the area of operations.
Operation EASTER EGGS
This operation was announced by the US Navy, and stressed it did not involve army forces.
It refuses to reveal any details, but a drunken sailor was interviewed by a Hawaiian female reporter, and after some persuasion, she managed to get some inside information, stating the eggs where going to be delivered at the imperial doorstep.
The sailor also said he volunteered for a suicide mission, in order to get more detailed intel in certain areas. Life jackets where distributed to the volonteers and a waiver was signed, that the equipment did not need to be returned, due to the nature of the mission.
NEWS from INTEL & PR
After the recent INTEL discovery of Japanese float planes on submarines, security has been stepped up,
Furthermore the service has received reliable information that the following ships and commanders were eliminated in the aftermath of the FIJI campaign
CA Furutaka, CA Kinugasa, CA Takao and the DD Yugumo have all sunk after the battle due to damage sustained by combat
CPT Takahashi, Yuji has been KILLED (believed to be eaten by sharks after the sinking of his ship)
LCDR Matsumoto, Shohei has been KILLED (Could not swim, and went down with his ship)
CDR K. Kawabata has been KILLED (was last seen peddling the wrong way in a rubber dinky, without food or water, presumed dead)
This information has been acquired after a mercenary Geisha who used Sake in abundance in a tokyo strip club, where the high command of the imperial navy is frequently seen. The club is also known as The Spicy Nippon.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I just found his carrier fleet, it launched strikes against my am ships I posted.
They are in full force at the Marshall islands.
I send 4 am suicide fleets to investigate the location of his carriers, and now I found his strike force.
No Karachi, no DEI, no Singers.
My Japanese opponent is heading straight for PH.

i am getting paranoid, he drops of 45 guys in a transport sub on Johnston island, they got wiped out and he sends a smiley that they did their job
??????????????
allied command in total disarray, while betty's are hammering Dutch Harbor, perhaps he has an eye on Canada as well?
But then, what does japan want with Canada..............it eludes me. for now I stick to PH.

Sounds like a reconnaissance attack to me. He landed them to see what units and forts level you have there. A bit gamey move if you ask me, nearly riskless sacrifice of less than handful of squads to get more or less perfect info on what you had on the island and how well dug in.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
Can you get any mines into port? Do you have subs that can lay mines??
I dont think you can create PT boats yet but if you can it might help.
Also, if you have any air HQ's and transports you might want to move some AV support to another base close by if possible. I dont know if you have airfields on the adjacent islands yet.
Definitely move AVP/AVD to the islands and put additional search assets there so if he does bombard PH and take down the airfield you are not completely blind.

to my surprise this is the action around FIJI, now I am completely lost in his intensions, having such a force at Fiji it will be impossible to take PH, with only 4 carriers and 8 Battleships

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I am puzzled, it is end January 1942, no oil regions have been touched, the complete DEI is still under Dutch control, even Tarakan is Dutch.
No pressure in Malaya,i retreated to singers and japan stopped advancing well north of Singapore.
I am actually recapturing bases in the Philippine's. I destroyed the Tanaka regiment chasing it down the island.
I lost 4 BB's being caught completely off guard, no allied CV in the FIJI area, and my main defense force sunk.
but FIJI alone wont win Japan the war, it needs OIL and it needs OIL fast. what happens if in march 1942 japan still has no access to OIL?

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
Don't look a gift horse in the face!! My guess in that 4th will pluck Noumea or Suva shortly. KB there to clear area.....the CAs from Loganville had best run! I wouldn't worry too much about Oahu right now....maybe Midway or Kauai or big island. Seeing Bettys in Alaska is interesting....where the hell they based?? This is an interesting portend; either your opponent is wasting these precious planes or there is something big afoot up north.
What have you done to keep him from getting the DEI prize later?...ie consolidating into several defendable sites and accumulating supplies. Are you getting supplies to Sing and Manila? If you really plan on holding these, likely 100,000 in supplies each needed.
If you know where KB is, that is a good place not to be until mid-42 when Devastaters and Buffaloe are replaced. Do not get sucked into thinking you can beat them in fair fight.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
I have been digging in at DEI, and using my airpower smartly, but he never pushed it, and he has just enough forces on Singers and Burma to keep it balanced, in Phil I think he miscalculated and is now in defense, and some retreats as I discovered the onslaught was done with to little troops.
so he is brewing something, and these betty's come from the captured US bases in the kurille islands. they are pounding Dutch Harbor.
now is an invasion of Canada decisive enough to let DEI be in allied hands so long?
Taking suva is also a key move, why so late in januari? it was much easier to take them with the 4th division end of December
something big is up, but what.......

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
The only place in Canada that is feasible is Vancouver Island. It is marginally defendable and would imperil Seattle area. Who the hell else would want it, especially in January!! Having said that you better check victory points assigned to Alaska and Canada.
RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
As one player showed against Canoerebel, the Japanese have an opportunity for autovictory if they take the bases in Alaska and
northern Canada, plus high value South Pacific island bases like Noumea and Suva. The Japanese get many more VPs for these than
the Allies. That could explain his current efforts in those two areas.

RE: Marshall vs Russian Heel
Brilliant that is it.
That would explain the carriers in the south and his betty bombers and carriers in the north.
PH will be almost impossible to take at this moment.
So all I need to do now is to protect the high value bases in Canada, and see the Japanese war machine bleed to death in 43, due to lack of oil.
I will try to hold Suva, and high value bases in Canada. and keep my carriers safe. then it will be impossible to get a auto victory for japan.
Alaska is hopeless to defend
