Upgrading DMS to E

Hey,

I just wonder, if upgrading japanese W-class minesweepers from DMS to E (early 43 upgrade) would kill their minesweeping capacity? I often use these to sweep fresh captured ports, or to protect invasion TFs from mines, and they do a good job there, which I dont want to miss..

Yes.

DD type ships can mine-sweep.... a few riflemen on the bow... but that's no way near as effective as a minesweeper. If you look at the combat reports you might see "DE Whatever swept (or destroyed not sure of the wording) 2 mines" vs. "DMS Whoever swept 21 mines".... a huge difference in effectiveness. So I would keep some W-Class as is... they will be needed in the first year of the war (as the Japs expand).
