This weekend I had an amazing experience welcoming home a close friend's father from an Honor Flight to Washington DC. He served in WWII in the Mighty 8th Air Force as a tail gunner on B-17Gs and flew 36! missions over Germany.

Honor Flight is an organization that provides US WWII veterans a free flight to Washington DC to tour the war memorials and be treated like the heroes they are. Everything on this trip is free and they have dedicated medical staff to help anyone who has difficulties. They received a military procession at the airport both coming and going, had a police escort throughout Washington DC, and stayed at the Hilton near the National Mall.

When they got home to a crowd of several hundred, the regional director of Honor Flight practically begged people to have any US WWII veterans that they knew sign up for Honor Flight. If you have a family relative or friend that served, urge them to take advantage of this FREE program. 59 soldiers, sailors, air men, marines, and 2 nurses got the respect and gratitude that they deserve this weekend. The youngest honoree was 85 and the oldest was 99.

It was very moving to see these heroes return. My friend's dad said about the experience, "I feel born again. I believe America can do anything."

I know a guy who ws on a communications ship of the coast for torch, sicily, and normandy. Almost went to the pacific, but the war ended. His daughter is driving out here to Ohio with my wife Easter sunday. I'll talk to her about it. Its a great idea. And I for one do look up to our vets, because my physical limitations kept me out of the service. GP

This definitely applies to veterans of other wars, such as Korea or Vietnam - especially if they are in poor health.
