I still have my original WitE first edition from SPI. I remember pre-ordering it and waiting anxiously for months for its arrival. When it came out I was in heaven, and spent an entire high school summer locked in my room playing solitaire. A year later, I had it set up on a ping pong table in the garage and 5 of us team played it over several months. It still has the black dots on it from all of the bugs that had fallen and died on the mapboard. Of course, like so many games, as it was the first edition, the game was totally unbalanced because we didn't know about the errata rules that came out later that shut down Soviet on-board factories after they lost 100 units. So my Soviet side had a wall of units that the Germans couldn't touch in 1942. But as they say, it's not the destination it's the journey, and I remember it being glorious. I wonder how many WitE computer players also played the WitE boardgame.
