In Soviet Russia, "comment" equals "read". Amazing.

Do you mean Atic Atak?? I remember my dad playing that when I was really young!

If so, I, too, bow to your PC Gaming seniority.

Edit: looked it up, it's actually "Atic Atac". Same game?

Yup same game just been awhile to remember how it was spelt. No matter someone will be along shortly no doubt and quote "pong"

I'd like to say that we used to play our computer games from inside of a shoe box, but no one would believe me, as no way would a computer fit in a shoe box in those days ...

Now that you mention it...

How about Radio Shack TV Scoreboard? I think we had that in the late 1970's. It had Pong and a couple variations, plus a light pistol.

As far as the topic at hand goes, I just bought DW a week or so ago, so I am overwhelmed with new stuff for now. :D

NEVER!!!!!!!!

Day four: Still don't have any new information. Beginning to feel sad. Will fight sadness by destroying nearby pirate hideout. Let's hope I bring enough firepower...

Don't worry, there are plenty of reinforcements. Matrix and Code Force are just on their Xmas/New Year break ... let's hope they are back tomorrow!

Just wait a moment.

A fourth expansion would make this the most expensive computer game on the market, seeing as fixes, repairs and patches which are necessary to play the game (and changes to the UI which were crucial) came in expansions DLC.

Milk it, but not that much, folks.

I adore this game, but, say, $100 not-sale price with all expansions for a computer game would be pushing it.

From the spacesector interview: "There’s several things about Distant Worlds that we regularly get feedback on. One is the pricing...We want at some point to do sort of a wrapped up release, that will combine all those together, and make both price and some other aspects of the game, like performance and other UI improvements, more accessible to the main stream audience, rather than the more hardcore strategy game audience."

I think it depends on their perception of the sales market. If they're primarily selling to people who have already bought up to 'Shadows', and they think there's a business case for selling those people another 'expansion', then why not go for it?. If they're trying to sell people the whole 'package' it'll be much harder, especially when the first game was released 3-4 years ago. So I can certainly see there may be a case for releasing another expansion. I'd buy it, but then I go around wearing a small piece of plastic with a vacuum operated end bit attached to my forehead. (Only kidding 'Matrix guys'.)

Osi... are YOU... The One?

Well, it is an interesting pricing and marketing strategy. Relying on word of mouth of converts on internet forums (like me!) - the true believers, but pricing the game so steeply so that a typical Joe Schmoe won't get this.

The price really is steep and a barrier to entry. But, it is a niche game, and friends of mine who play with plastic miniature soldiers pay upwards of $500 or more for their hobby, so it may work.

Either way, interesting game and interesting business model.

Day five: Losing hope. I'm worried that my pleas fall on deaf ears. Or absent ears. Or not even ears at all.

Will start a new game as a pirate faction and do really mean things in response.

Day six: What the hell...guess everyone is hard at work on expansion, too busy top answer my frequent inquiries. Will probably quit current game in protest. Probably for the better, as the damn Celaphs have me by the throat. YOU MADE ME DO IT, ERIK AND ELLIOT!

Maybe they really are considering Distant Worlds 2. Another expansion is hardly going to compete with Galactic Civilisations 3. While a good chunk of us would buy both, this would have to have an impact on expected sales.

What's going on anyway DevildogFF ... playing more Distant Worlds than Stardrive eh?

Well, it does have more legs than the latter....soooo yeah. I am. In all honesty, I've probably put 3 times as many hours in to DW than SD.

A combination of the two would rock my world, though.

They already said DW2 would come after the next expansion and since they already recruited beta testers for Universe I highly doubt they'll just scrap it for no good reason.

My understanding is this expansion is just mod based and has no new features so why the top secret silence makes little sence? People who actually mod would like to prepare and maybe have some txt files in advance.

Wasn't it supposedly about opening more resources to Modders? If some of the now 'fixed' options can become mod-able then we could start seeing really incredible play extension.
More Govt types, new Wonders, variable tech trees, all could maybe become commonplace.

I'm just hoping for extensive component modding possibilities as I already have big plans for a complete overhaul, though its probably gonna fall short of my expectations. I want to introduce different size components like Titan Beam XL and Heavy Armor XL so that there's a choice between mounting big guns that can punch through capital grade armor or lots of small guns to deal with frigate swarms or some such. I'd love to tinker with the ship AI as well though I'm pretty sure thats not gonna happen. I also paused work on my "optimized designs for everything" mod that I was working on previously in anticipation of the new expansion. I'm curious what other pipe dreams the modders on here have come up with. But whatever the new modding capabilities are gonna be in the end there's bound to be a plethora of great new mods so I am eagerly awaiting March/April.

Good 2014 preview article here from Adam over at Space Sector with a mention of the Distant Worlds expansion (and this thread)

A List of Space/Sci-Fi/Fantasy Games You Can’t Miss in 2014

Hey Erik, if your goal is to release as little information as practically possible as compared to your competitors, you deserve a bonus!
