Just Another AAR... Wargmr (A) Gunnulf (J)

Post by Mike McCreery »

Attempting my first AAR against a human opponent. I am playing Gunnulf who has posted on these forums.
Scenario 1
Fog of war ON
Advanced weather effects ON
Allied Damage Control ON
Player Defined Upgrades ON
Historical 1st Turn OFF
Dec 7th Surprise ON
Reliable USN torpedoes OFF
Realistic R&D ON
No unit withdrawals OFF

The twist is that the game has already been going on for 2 months IRL and 6 months in game. Therefore, the AAR will be back dated. I do not mind helpful hints but understand if I do not act upon them ;]

We did a non-historic first turn but I took no actions as I would not have known anything was going on.
Since it is my first PEBM against a human and I did not know what to expect I started the game very conservatively, attempting to prevent a Japanese auto-victory.

Production wise, I shut down all of the Heavy Industry I could find in Australia and shut down much of the fort and airfield production in central India and in Australia.

I do not believe it is advantageous to fight for ground in the first few months of the war. In my opinion it is better to remove as many assets from danger as possible and give up ground for time.
The first turn is pretty typical.

The battleships get hit hard but none sink on the initial turn.
Force Z is decimated.

I attempted to withdraw some troops from Hong Kong but Japanese warships destroyed all of the fleeing ships. At Pearl Harbor I put up as much cap as possible to defend against a 2nd day strike that never came. His subs are ringed around PH but I am not interested in moving from there anyway. One of the ships that was evacuating troops from Manila took a torpedo and was sunk. I do not plan on evacuating much from Manila as I do not know my opponents aggressiveness yet.

BB Tennessee has a fire of 40 and flotation damage of 95 so I am going to lose her.
The Saratoga is headed for PH.

I have the 8th marine regiment, the C det UNS port Svc and the 110th USA base force headed for Pago Pago.
In this game I am going to use San Francisco as my primary shipping hub so all LCU's that are not permanently restricted will be heading for here along with all free shipping.
I am amphibiously loading anything else I can carry for shipping somewhere west. At this point I do not know where we are going to clash but the likely spots are Noumea, Suva or places farther east. Based on my reading of other AAR's I am going to try to get there first.

Enterprise & Lexington are headed for Baker Island. I want to protect these assets right now.
Evacuated 3rd Cavalry Rgt, SSVF Bde, & 224th Group RAF from Manila.
Grabbed part of the 2/15 punjab bn from Kuching for evacuation to Colombo.
Moving all troops in SE Papua toward Port Moresby or Terapo.
Moving troops out of Tavoy and Moulmeing toward Rangoon. I do not plan on contesting Burma at all.
All Chinese troops are backing up and finding better terrain.

The part of the 2/15 Punjab Bn that was evacuated from Kuching was sunk by a sub.
Sending 111th USN, 34th infantry Regiment, 112th USA base force, 56th Costal Artillery Regiment, 47th Construction regiment and 198th FA Bn to Suva.
Re-routed the 147th FA RGt, 115th USAAF Base Force, 114th USAAF Base Force and the 131st FA Bn to Suva.
At this point in the game I was salivating over reinforcing Noumea and making it a lvl 7 port. However, I was unsure how fast and how strong my opponent would be in the area so I compromised and planned to set up on Suva first and then move to Noumea when it seemed prudent to do so.

The AVP Poolster sinks due to a sub. I have never managed to save this ship. As a pool man I take it personally...

I decide to show the Japanese I am not completely toothless and launch an attack on the forces unloading at Miri with 4 DD's. I manage to sink an AK along with killing almost 800 troops.
The Japanese are making a mess of my evacuations from Hong Kong and Manila.

KB is 7 hexes SE of Port Moresby

CV Lexington and CV Enterprise are at Noumea waiting for opportunities.

CV Saratoga chilling out at Pearl Harbor.

Most British & Indian ground troops have orders to move directly out of Burma to India to form a skirmish line at the border.

China is collapsing as fast as possible to protect the troops and VP's.

Every availible LCU is being moved from the East Coast to the SW pacific as fast as possible. I am still keeping a good amount of LCU at Pearl Harbor because I am concerned about an attack in that direction.
