Marcky Marc and the Funky Bunch - GCanal

Post by jeffk3510 »

Howdy all.

schanilec and I have finally taken each other up on a WiTP AE game. For right now, we're going to play GCanal.

Marc will be playing as Japan for the first time ever, and I will handle the Allies.

No house rules that either of us discussed. The game was intended that way when it was made years ago IMO.

We're still cranking out turns in Campaign Series.. he's handing me my ass in Trouble Along the Ilu. It's about time, though. I have been abusing him on the East Front and the hedgerows of Europe.

We're still playing our 3x2 PBEM with Bill and Hartwig.. going steady there...May 42'..we don't really update it any more..we can, though.

I have an AI grand campaign and an AI GCanal game as well.. I'll probably follow the same strategy as my AI GCanal game.. but it may not work against a human opponent.

I threw the kitchen sink at Tulagi and Lunga...put all the possible fighters I could put onto Lunga, put all of my fighters at different altitudes, and have been bleeding Japan in the air. Plan on doing the same at Port Moresby as well. Have had excellent success there...we'll see if this works against Marc.

Marc has an AI campaign game as the Allies well into 44', and appears to know his shiz on this stuff. We'll see how he handles Japan for the first time.

we will be using r9 BTW.. not Beta.

I prefer beta, but Marc didn't want to mess up his ongoing AI game...which it won't, but he didn't want to risk three years of hard work.

Life is tough. The sooner you realize that, the easier it will be.

Turn sent to Marc.

Did a lot of first turn jobbies..

Subs, planes, pilots.. yada yada.

Nothing major set for the first day. I am striking the AF on Lunga.. can't remember if Jap planes start there or not, but I wan't it shut down prior to hitting the beaches in four turns.

All 2E/4E bombers resting to allow for max planes in a few days, and a morale boost before making it rain.

Aus and Canberra are the major guns in the bombardment group, which will proceed the Lunga invasion. I will not bombard Tulagi, but I do have APDs set up as fast transports from Luganville once we're ashore.

Covering forces are 2 2CA/4DD SAGs with identical ship types - the only way to go!

CVs set to merge and cover the invasion and soften the AF prior to their arrival.

The Wasp is such a shitty CV..[8|]

Hah, in Andy's Ironman, Ranger is an Essex Class CV and starts the game paired with Lexington ... I was a bit surprised he didn't make it a Midway class ... [:D]

I don't like that she slows the whole damned group down, has zero protection, and lights up faster than Pall Malls. I understand she was squized in with the lefter over tonnage from the Washington Naval Treaty.. but man.. She is better than nothing, right?

Thanks for the kinds words. How is your area recovering?

Also, keep in mind Marc doesn't have internet at home. He downloads the turn at work, brings it home, then runs it and returns it to me the next day, so this won't be as fast as two people that can play every evening.

I also just remembered that Japan doesn't start with any AV support or planes in Lunga. Going to bomb it into oblivion the first turn for nothing more than supply hits.

Oh well.

Thanks.

Almost zero action this turn.

Marc has sortied his fleet from Rabaul, and surely what he has in Truk...I just don't have eyes up there, yet.

Curious to see what his plan is for Port Moresby area. I want to control the skies over this area, and will throw the necessary planes and men at it.

No action on Lunga...CVs didn't move as far for some reason...waiting for all of the to catch up and follow lead TF looks like.
They should have been in position to strike Lunga.. oh well, I found out I don't want to damage the AF.. he can't use it yet.

Does anyone else find the GCanal scenario lacking in some areas?

NONE of Japans troops are prepped for anything... The only troops prepped for anything are the Allies invasion forces... maybe I am missing something.

Also, as seen in the screenshot below, everyone should update their art. TF Mission art, plane art, unit art.. etc etc.

The extra "chrome" is really nice. Highly recommended.

A couple days out from the invasion of Lunga and Tulagi.

Invasion forces set to link with CVs, who will hit Lunga this turn.

Fast mine layers will be right behind the invasion forces to quickly mine Lunga, hopefully catch Marc with his pants
down if he forgets about these little dudes.

a small DD force will follow up as well - they seem to do pretty well as SAG on their own, and I like to use them to
keep Japan honest.

I also moved the 52nd Aviation unit from Townsville to Charters Town. CT is already a big enough AF to fly B17s from,
but doesn't have enough AV. This unit has 90av.. plenty.

Turn sent to Marc

Good exchange on air units over Port Moresby... looks like Marc is going to make a push for that area.
The strike appears to come from two different areas. Lae and Rabaul.. there are fighters that do start at Lae.
Going to lower the fighter alt as he came in under 10k, and probably put more planes on LRCAP.. currently, they're
all CAP with 1 range, which will cover the 30th Aus BDE one hex east of Port Moresby.

Hit Lunga with all three CVs and B17s from Noumea this turn.. 100+ casualties. No destroyed squads though..[8|]

Going to hit the beaches this turn and bombard during the night. Not sure if I am going to strike with CVs again..

Haven't decided.

Bombardment of Lunga went very well during the night.. Then the troops went ashore with zero complications...
Everyone is ashore during the turn at Lunga, and a few support are still waiting to offload at Tulagi.

Going to deliberate attack both places this turn and fly in ground support with B17s from Noumea.

I noticed one of Marc's subs hit a mine I just placed at Tulagi.. he has to be pissed.. haha!

Going to hit the ground forces east of PM with Marauders from Cooktown at extended range, so it will be a reduced bomb load.
Should have around 20-30 hit them depending on who decides to fly.

B-17s from Charters Towers are all on AF strike against Buna, next turn Lae to shut down those AFs.

Retiring ships from the Lunga/Tulagi invasions.

CVs sticking around to cover the last of the landing ships and men on shore, who will deliberate attack both
places this turn. SAGs will patrol with the CVs, looking for opportunities to pounce on unescorted taskforces of Marcs.

Turn sent
