Howdy all.

schanilec and I have finally taken each other up on a WiTP AE game. For right now, we're going to play GCanal.

Marc will be playing as Japan for the first time ever, and I will handle the Allies.

No house rules that either of us discussed. The game was intended that way when it was made years ago IMO.

We're still cranking out turns in Campaign Series.. he's handing me my ass in Trouble Along the Ilu. It's about time, though. I have been abusing him on the East Front and the hedgerows of Europe.

We're still playing our 3x2 PBEM with Bill and Hartwig.. going steady there...May 42'..we don't really update it any more..we can, though.

I have an AI grand campaign and an AI GCanal game as well.. I'll probably follow the same strategy as my AI GCanal game.. but it may not work against a human opponent.

I threw the kitchen sink at Tulagi and Lunga...put all the possible fighters I could put onto Lunga, put all of my fighters at different altitudes, and have been bleeding Japan in the air. Plan on doing the same at Port Moresby as well. Have had excellent success there...we'll see if this works against Marc.

Marc has an AI campaign game as the Allies well into 44', and appears to know his shiz on this stuff. We'll see how he handles Japan for the first time.

we will be using r9 BTW.. not Beta.

I prefer beta, but Marc didn't want to mess up his ongoing AI game...which it won't, but he didn't want to risk three years of hard work.

Turn sent to Marc.

Did a lot of first turn jobbies..

Subs, planes, pilots.. yada yada.

Nothing major set for the first day. I am striking the AF on Lunga.. can't remember if Jap planes start there or not, but I wan't it shut down prior to hitting the beaches in four turns.

All 2E/4E bombers resting to allow for max planes in a few days, and a morale boost before making it rain.

Aus and Canberra are the major guns in the bombardment group, which will proceed the Lunga invasion. I will not bombard Tulagi, but I do have APDs set up as fast transports from Luganville once we're ashore.

Covering forces are 2 2CA/4DD SAGs with identical ship types - the only way to go!

CVs set to merge and cover the invasion and soften the AF prior to their arrival.

The Wasp is such a ****ty CV..

Hah, in Andy's Ironman, Ranger is an Essex Class CV and starts the game paired with Lexington ... I was a bit surprised he didn't make it a Midway class ...

I don't like that she slows the whole damned group down, has zero protection, and lights up faster than Pall Malls. I understand she was squized in with the lefter over tonnage from the Washington Naval Treaty.. but man.. She is better than nothing, right?

Thanks for the kinds words. How is your area recovering?

Very interesting. Where does one find these scenarios other than what comes in stock?

Thanks.

Also, keep in mind Marc doesn't have internet at home. He downloads the turn at work, brings it home, then runs it and returns it to me the next day, so this won't be as fast as two people that can play every evening.

I also just remembered that Japan doesn't start with any AV support or planes in Lunga. Going to bomb it into oblivion the first turn for nothing more than supply hits.

Oh well.

Thanks.

Almost zero action this turn.

Marc has sortied his fleet from Rabaul, and surely what he has in Truk...I just don't have eyes up there, yet.

Curious to see what his plan is for Port Moresby area. I want to control the skies over this area, and will throw the necessary planes and men at it.

No action on Lunga...CVs didn't move as far for some reason...waiting for all of the to catch up and follow lead TF looks like.
They should have been in position to strike Lunga.. oh well, I found out I don't want to damage the AF.. he can't use it yet.

Does anyone else find the GCanal scenario lacking in some areas?

NONE of Japans troops are prepped for anything... The only troops prepped for anything are the Allies invasion forces... maybe I am missing something.

Also, as seen in the screenshot below, everyone should update their art. TF Mission art, plane art, unit art.. etc etc.

The extra "chrome" is really nice. Highly recommended.

A couple days out from the invasion of Lunga and Tulagi.

Invasion forces set to link with CVs, who will hit Lunga this turn.

Fast mine layers will be right behind the invasion forces to quickly mine Lunga, hopefully catch Marc with his pants
down if he forgets about these little dudes.

a small DD force will follow up as well - they seem to do pretty well as SAG on their own, and I like to use them to
keep Japan honest.

I also moved the 52nd Aviation unit from Townsville to Charters Town. CT is already a big enough AF to fly B17s from,
but doesn't have enough AV. This unit has 90av.. plenty.

Turn sent to Marc

Good exchange on air units over Port Moresby... looks like Marc is going to make a push for that area.
The strike appears to come from two different areas. Lae and Rabaul.. there are fighters that do start at Lae.
Going to lower the fighter alt as he came in under 10k, and probably put more planes on LRCAP.. currently, they're
all CAP with 1 range, which will cover the 30th Aus BDE one hex east of Port Moresby.

Hit Lunga with all three CVs and B17s from Noumea this turn.. 100+ casualties. No destroyed squads though..

Going to hit the beaches this turn and bombard during the night. Not sure if I am going to strike with CVs again..

Haven't decided.

Bombardment of Lunga went very well during the night.. Then the troops went ashore with zero complications...
Everyone is ashore during the turn at Lunga, and a few support are still waiting to offload at Tulagi.

Going to deliberate attack both places this turn and fly in ground support with B17s from Noumea.

I noticed one of Marc's subs hit a mine I just placed at Tulagi.. he has to be pissed.. haha!

Going to hit the ground forces east of PM with Marauders from Cooktown at extended range, so it will be a reduced bomb load.
Should have around 20-30 hit them depending on who decides to fly.

B-17s from Charters Towers are all on AF strike against Buna, next turn Lae to shut down those AFs.

Retiring ships from the Lunga/Tulagi invasions.

CVs sticking around to cover the last of the landing ships and men on shore, who will deliberate attack both
places this turn. SAGs will patrol with the CVs, looking for opportunities to pounce on unescorted taskforces of Marcs.

Turn sent

A good day for the Allies. Lunga was captured and we're ready to move in support. I need to get Base Units ashore
before I fly in planes. There wasn't any with the initial wave.

Hit Buna, with some damage to the AF.

CVs will stay in the area to provide air cover for Lunga and Tulagi until LBA can arrive. SAGs will remain on patrol
in and around all of the islands. They will retire once we establish LBA on Lunga.

Interesting game. I am currently playing Guad against the AI to practice using the Allied toys so it's fun to see this play out while I do that.

Two things are very clear to me from that AI game.

1) The Allies are very different from the Japanese. Kind of a "duh" statement, but using them feels a lot clumsier than I expected after playing Japan exclusively. Then again, that's why I want to play one GC as Allies - it will up my game to know both sides.

2) The small OOBs in the Guad scenario really teach you the difference between historical reality and the massive Schwerpunkt efforts players regularly put together in GC games. Then again, I'm not sure whether the players are over allocating or whether the RL commands under allocated. I think it boils down to political constraints, particularly on the Allied side, requiring large garrisons for rear areas. That's why IMHO the "SOPAC Rear Area" restricted command units are cool.

I think it boils down to political constraints, particularly on the Allied side, requiring large garrisons for rear areas. That's why IMHO the "SOPAC Rear Area" restricted command units are cool.

Thank you for your comments, and for stopping by.

1 - I haven't had much of a chance to do more than just like at the Japanese side in all scenarios. I get a "majestic"
feel when I am looking at their ships for some reason. I don't like how many different ship classes you have to mix
and match.. with the Allies, mainly USN, you have tons of ships of that same class that are easy to run in groups together IMO.

2 - That is a pretty good observation about this small scenario, and I do like the historical reality that is in this scenario.

It also seems to be so much more fun playing against a human than the computer.

Action picked up a little bit this turn. Marc ran in a powerful all CA force that bombarded Tulagi during the night,
and trashed my APD supply ships.. My CVs were waiting for this sort of action, but I had them sitting in massive
thunderstorms and couldn't conduct flight ops... oh well. Maybe Marc sensed that would happen.. he has zero air
coverage in the area to be sending in his entire CA fleet like that.

I was REALLY hoping to tangle in a surface action with his CAs and CLs.. and then finish them off that next morning
with my CVs.. oh well. You make plans, and then **** happens. His SAG would have probably bloodied mine pretty bad
but I would have caught him that next morning in the air.

Troops on Tulagi set to attack this turn... should be getting close to taking the island.

Loading up base forces and AV support for Lunga this turn. I didn't shuffle my APs around correctly on turn one to
have a follow up with the base forces and AV support like I wanted. Likely 5-6 days from landing them on Lunga.

Until then, I will keep CVs and SAGs in the area.

Turn sent to Marc.

Thanks for the AAR, I am trying this campaign game out vs a human Japanese player.

I am a novice, still trying to figure out the basics of the game so if I can may I ask a couple of questions?

1. In this scenario -- I believe all the Aus Bdes are all under Australian Command, but I see you are shipping them off to PM. At this stage of the game there isn't enough Political Points to change commands so are you moving them now in anticipation of making that cost later or is it even necessary?

2. Sidney appears to be the main fuel source and trying to set up supply and tanker runs in the first few turns is leaving me with Luganville and Efret(sp?) on the margins of supply and fuel starvation. Any tips on setting up your supply net in this scenario?

3. As you most recently posted, the invasion fleet did not come packed with av-support or the sea-bees so I am 'packing them' up for strategic sea movement while the original invasion fleet comes back from Lunga - other than the Marine units and an av-support and a sea-bee unit, what else are you planning on sending in this next wave?

Will continue to follow and thanks again.

I shipped just the HQ that I change to an un-restricted command. I didn't cost me very much. It may even of started with a non-restricted HQ... I don't remember.
I won't switch any of the Aussie BDEs because of cost because Marc won't realistically take Port Moresby in this scenario. HQs are very important for adding AV to units
within their command range, and helps with other things such as morale, fatigue, and disruption.

You are correct about Sidney. Noumea does have a tick. I don't really do anything with Efate in this scenario.. I do sometimes in the grand campaign.
I usually don't set up any CS taskforces (continuous supply) in this scenario. I just have some tankers/AKs setting around
that I fill up when Sidney has a nice stockpile of fuel and send it all to Noumea. From there it goes to Luganville on smaller ships.
Once form there, usually on fast transports to the Solomons with air cover. However, my APDs in the fast transport to Tulagi got blasted last turn...
They only haul around 100 or so supply, but it adds up after a while. Is this the best strategy for this game? I dunno, but it works for me.

I have everything moving in combat mode on an amphib task force, not in strategic mode. Lunga isn't a large port, or maybe she is just a two.
Not very big, so I just use amphibious taskforces. There are some units on Noumea that are not restricted that should be loaded up day one..
I just forgot to do this. In the next wave will be as much combat firepower (to hold the island) that I can bring within PP restrictions.
As much AV support as I can (one eng unit has 90AV I believe).. the instant my AV units hit the shores, I have Wildcats ready to fly in from Luganville.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Thank you so much for the kind comments and questions. I like a good chat. I talk for a living

I just noticed you mentioned you're playing a Jap human opponent.

I don't want you think Port Moresby is a side show by any means... I just don't see Japan ever taking Port Moresby in this scenario once Lunga is taken on day four. They have to shift a ton of attention between both places, when all I have to do is hold my ground and attrition him around Port Moresby. I want to eventually get tactical bombers on Moresby and Mline Bay to pound that area into oblivion, and then place strategic bombers there to shutdown airfields/ports. I will then use GCanal and my CVs over east in the Solomons to do the same. He has to make a choice where to commit land/sea/air units. I've already done that because my chess pieces start on the board day one.

Great AAR so far, and I am trying this scenario out against the Japanese AI to get a feel for the game and learn the basic mechanics before moving on. You said to get the graphics mods, which look great! I know where you got the map, but where did you get the other ones?

Pretty quiet turn. Sub action and my B17s hit his ground forces again.. daily pounding here. Disruption and fatigue
should be showing up.

Tulagi still hasn't fallen, but I won't waste any sorties or heavy bombers against it. I will just attack again.

Attack, attack, attack!

I have all of my CVs laying in wait for his forces to show up in the next few days. They haven't been detected, yet.
All float plains are stood down, while my DBs are NOT searching. I want to keep my detection as low as possible.

I put all of my CVs on 30 CAP, 50 LRCAP with Lunga as my target.

I want to set a nice CAP trap over Lunga if he does a port/af attack again this turn. I have left room for escorts
or additional CAP should the situation arise.

SAGs are standing by, covering my CVs.
