Has anyone figured out how to use Satellites?

Post by Gunner98 »

Building a large 1994 Russia vs NATO scenario and figure that Sats would be part of the show - but I'm not sure how they work?

Has anyone had any success with them?

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking:
To add them: just go into "Editor" tab, scroll down about three-quarters of the way to "Add Satellites" and it pops up a pretty simple menu which shows the satellites in orbit at the date/time of your scenario. Its really awesome because it saves you a bunch of research and aggravation. Once you add them, you might have to zoom out and spin the globe around a bit to find the satellite, then click and it should display the orbit. Unfortunately the orbital display line cuts off when the globe breaks LOS to the satellite.

Using them in scenarios: as far as I can tell, you can't maneuver them at all and they simply act as additional sensor platforms. I haven't noticed anything particular about their function. The NOSS (American ELINT sats) seem to work rather well and there is a perfectly placed constellation for anything involving the Middle East.

Thanks

Inserting them into the scenario is not an issue, its figuring out which one will be useful. I found no other option but to hunt & peck and finally found one with an orbit that makes sense with my scenario. Is there a site or sites which give an idea of orbital routes?

Many of them on the available list have de-orbited and I assume that this is based on the scenario start time, if so that is excellent.

Like many things I guess its a case of trial and error.

I too have no idea where I would start with Sats.

I posted a thread a while ago about satellites. I built a test scenario with lots of them and found that their sensors didn't seem to work in detecting an enemy ship. I do believe it's on the developer's plan to fix this.

We haven't forgotten you on this [;)]. This was a case of the Lacrosse's orbital path taking it to so high an altitude that its sensor footprint literally did not touch the earth at all. We'll have to investigate if the Lacrosse's SAR radar should be more powerful or whether it is indeed accepted by its operators that during a portion of its orbit the sat is effectively "blind".

Took a while but I plucked a couple which overfly my scenario and believe me - the sensors work! I have no idea if they should be this effective but there was almost 80-90% clarity when the Sat was overhead. Impressive.
