OT: Uncommon Valor

Post by John 3rd »

Posted this over on the Uncommon Valor Forum but it is DEAD.

I have my original copy of UV and my 10 year-old son wants to try and play it. I've long since lost my pass code. How do I get that? Is UV compatible with new Laptops?

Thanks!

I just tried to load in on my computer and got the following error message:

Error Executing File

E:\setup.exe

The requested operation requires elevation.

Is the game too old to use?

John,

A lot of the older games need DOS to run and after winXP you must you an emulator (like dosbox), or keep an old machine around loaded with win98 or something like that. I have an old win98 box just to run my old software. It even has 8" floppy drives as some of my software is still on that media. [;)]

Thanks Pax, however, I ran UV on a regular PC about 5 years ago. There has got to be a way to still use it.

When I look at the product specs on the Matrix site:
Product Requirements :

Windows 95/98/2000/XP
DirectX 8.1
Pentium II 400 MHz CPU
64MB Ram
16 Bit Direct Sound comp. Soundcard
8MB Video Graphics Card 16Bit
8x CD-Rom
900 MB Free Hard Disc Space

I assume you're working with Windows 7 at the moment. You can try running the setup.exe in compatibility mode for XP (any service pack will do, try them all). If that doesn't get it to run... I wonder if maybe you're not having a file ownership problem. If you had a password on the user account from which you're taking these backups, I think it likely. Especially if they came from an XP user account. See here:

What that message is trying to tell you is that you need to elevate the permissions in Windows to run setup (ie run as administrator). Most programs need administrator permissions to install.

UV essentially runs on the same core game engine as AE, but it's a much older version of it. You should be able to get it to run on any version of Windows from 95 on. Though it may take some work with Vista or later because of all the new security features.

You may also find the same slowness problems on a multicore we ran into with AE, though maybe not.
