How to build carriers?

Greetings,

I have more than the required fighter and construction techs needed in order to build carriers. However, after designing my spiffy new carrier, I can't figure out where/how to actually order one built.

Neither the space port nor the planetary ship building screens have an icon/button for building carriers. The planetary screen does have an odd button with a hammer icon, that, when moused over, produces "CANNOT BUILD" (What is that for, anyways?)

Check the top bar - right of the center theres the actual main "build ships" button...

The "cant build" is most likely the green one which refers to planetary improvements which you have none researched yet?

Carriers are built in space ports not planets. If there is no option to build one at a port then you must be missing some tech and from what I've seen it is probably something in the construction tech. E.g. hull size but it's a guess.

If the design is too large you can't build it. On the design page you should see a warning at the top if this is the case.

How do you normally build a military ship?
For space ports, it should be under the construction yards tab.
Perhaps you accidently obsoleted your carrier design?

My fighter tech is at "Advanced Star Fighters", and my construction tech is at maximum (build size 1500).

My carrier has been successfully created and saved without warning. It has not been accidentally obsoleted or deleted.

There is simply no build carrier icon available from the planetary construction screen (There isn't a "grayed out"/disabled button. There isn't any button at all.) Nor is a build carrier option available from the right click, build on planet pop up menu.

The icons which appear on my planetary build screen are, from left to right...
LSP (or sometimes MSP or SSP)
DFB
CLN
CST
RS
The mysterious black button with hammer icon that produces the "CANNOT BUILD" notification.
A blank unpopulated button space.
And lastly, the Return to Previous Screen button.

Carriers are built at space ports rather than planets. Do you have a space port that you can build it at?

Yes, I have oodles of space ports (Bah, I misresd a previous reply, and thought Chris H said that carriers were build on planets, not space ports. Thus my description of my planetary build options. Although I still wonder about that hammer icon. /shrug)

The buttons available to me on the space port build screen are, from left to right,...
Escort
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser
Capital
Troop Trans
Explorer
Return to previous screen

However, the right click pop up menu contains...DRUM ROLL PLEASE...the elusive build carrier option!

Yep, was about to recommend the right click menu and the very useful Build Order Screen (the hammer icon button on the top button bar. There are only so many buttons that fit on the context selection buttons on the bottom left, so researchable designs are left off there.
