The Japanese Prime Minister said that Japan did not 'invade' China or Korea.

Maybe the term "invasion" has not been nailed down to his satisfaction, but the term "occupation" was nailed down by international treaty in 1907:

I find this concerning. That region of the world is unstable enough with North Korea acting out. Statements like Abe's does not help to stand down tensions.

This is the latest incarnation of a common thread in Japanese politics: whenever a politician needs to establish his credentials with the nationalists, he makes a statement disowning responsibility for the war or takes a symbolic action to the same effect. China and Korea make unhappy noises, and things move on. Frankly, the increased saber-rattling over the South China Sea islands has more to do with this than the Dear Leader, and that's what scares me - China actually has something resembling a navy this time.

There is no surprise in this to me. Imagine that your country had lost a war and the victorious side's forces occupied your land. Now imagine that you got a new constitution that for all intents and purposes was dictated to you by this victorious side. A country has the right to alter it's constitution. To deny historical fact is nothing new and no doubt this will go a long way in Asia towards damaging Japan's relations with many other countries that suffered under Japanese rule in the 30's and 40s.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

The Japanese Government certainly has every reason to try and shun it's responsibility for the hugely brutal occupation it inflicted on so many of it's neighbors. But I doubt any of their neighbors are buying this line of BS....

With Chinese saying that Okinawa isn't Japanese anyone can see where this heading if there are no cool heads.
