When upgrading some of the crusiers, they lose their float plane contingent. Wondering what most players do with them?

You can train patrol squadron pilots. I got the floatplanes off a battleship before it sank and used the unit to train pilots. You can only train a few at a time, but it beats nothing.

This happens to the Allies late in the war. Most BBs and a lot of cruisers lose their float planes. Guess they were becoming redundant and more of a liability.

Could also be used for 'point defense' ASW on smaller atolls etc.

Japanese doctrine used float planes on surface ships for both gunnery spotting and naval search. The USN generally only had float planes for gunnery spotting using carrier bombers for the search mission, though float planes were probably used on the search mission sometimes.

As radar directed gunnery became the norm, using float planes for spotting became redundant and more of a hazard than a help. Eliminating float planes got rid of the av gas on board, as well as the weight of all the handling equipment.

float planes will also fly CAP, badly but some is better than none. i have had float plane pilots get ace status against Sallys and Lilys.

Naval search is a sore point for me as the japanese side:i would rather use Nettys as
strike aircraft,i can build a few hundred H8K's, but not enough groups use them.
So i build Jakes in large numbers, removing the second squadron from BB's & CA's,
I transfer them to one of capacity 9 AV's & resize them. Then either use them
as land based naval search,or leave them on the AV as a scouting TF for the KB.

If i lose any I-Boats, i recall the sunk squadron, change to Jakes,& then resize to
9 planes. Might be a bit gamey, but the IJN needs all the help it can get.

I do almost the same... but I use CS to resize instead

therefore; it is 24 planes as long as I have Chitose/ Chiyoda; and then 20 planes after these 2 become CVLs

I also keep some as size-9; basically one for each AV; these I use as forward base searchs

I don't know if this is gamey... my AI opponent has not complained ... I would also love to have more Mavis/ Emily squadrons... we have so few to spare that these go just into the main/ most strategic bases

Since you're keeping the squadrons on the ships for the most part, I don't think a human would complain either.

I just love reading this kind of thing, as I devote a lot of TLC to FP pilots. I train them for ASW 1st, then NavS, then Recon. Haven't ever used them for CAP, but since a fine CruDiv of mine just got pasted by multiple waves of Lily kamikazes off Hakkodate that overwhelmed the land-based LRCAP, I'll not be ignoring that in the future.

Query: My BombTFs usually shoot at FullSpeed, w/ most FPs doing Night Recon on the target. Does the FPs' Recon skill aid shooting accuracy, or does the game just look at whether or not you've put planes in the air?

the USN doctrine was for float planes to be used primarily for gun spotting.

I set my float planes on recon (no target) then 20 CAP 20 ASW 20 search(no arc set both) and 20 REST.

one out of four squadrons in the TF on night ops.

much optimism on my part but I have had my successes.

note: if your planes do fly the mission, you will get a report in the combat messages.

even if they don't shoot anything, just by harrasing bombers, you can reduce their accuracy

F1M2 Pete (not to mention the JAP float fighters) is a good options as long as there are no escorts
