Per the thread titile:

a) Does an ACM need to be in a particular Mission profile? I set mine to Support and just let 'em float there. Sufficient?

b) Well, I really screwed it up - Feb 42 - Hornet arrives at Eastern US - tell it to go to Balboa (the 'inner' one in the CZ) and then messed with its destination (my fault, misread the screen) - now it looks like it's going to go the other way and arrive at Capetown, if it arrives. So...

...when a unit arrives 'deep' off-map, any recommendations for Home port, Destination? My original setting, San Diego, exceeded the Endurance, which I found a bit puzzling.

Thanx,
HH

Hi HexHead,

If you're using the ACM to support minefields and prevent degradation of same in a defensive minefield, they can do that just fine disbanded in port. They don't need to be in a support or any other TF to work. IIRC, there may be some (minimal) port supply requirements that they can nibble on over time to support the minefield too, but it's a small requirement. One of the numbers crunchers can cite you chapter and verse about what this is, I'm sure.

Chickenboy is right and I would even go further in that for the ACM to maintain a minefield it MUST be disbanded and it must have gas IIRC. If no fuel, no maintenance. I don't recall any supply concerns. But I could be wrong. Hal

Thanks, guys. As a general rule, I assume ya gotta have Fuel to operate, so I'm an absolute bear about trying to keep my Bases gassed up. Supplies are a bit easier, as far as I see.

As for the other - I just hope I haven't taken Hornet outta the war. I knew I shouldn't have fiddled with anything...

Concerning the Hornet you can move it up to Fast speed with out penalty to get it to CT quicker. Just make sure you change it before you assign her to move on to the Map. I would go to Perth to meet up with an escort and then you have the option of the South West Pacific or Indian Ocean for ops.

You do not need supplies but I think you should after all you are maintaining a minefield and spares, chains, mines etc will be needed to do that. Some ACM's can also carry mines but I do not know how they were used by the ACM. Some ACM do not carry either mines or supplies so how can they can possible function as ACM without either. I always keep ACM full of supplies, but not mines, if it's capable though it's not needed but it does seem the right thing to do. Each ACM can maintain a 150 minefield.

You should have no problem, at least I can't remember any, getting any CV to a large on map port for fuel. Most of my US CV went to PH, Br to Colombo but it did depend on game situation. Just make sure you also change the home port to the destination port.

Exactly what I suspected. Thanks.

On long trips, I always set the home port = destination even if the TF is going to return. The exception is sometimes I'll set it to an intermediate refuel point instead of using that as a waypoint. The reason in all cases is that the ships in the TF with surplus fuel over what's needed to reach the destination will freely refuel ships that do not have the endurance. Submarines of course, cannot refuel at sea.

Do ACMs have to have mines on board in order to maintain minefields? Or can I use them to lay mines and then let them maintain fields while empty.

And "never" change destination for ships in off board transit.

If the ACM can carry mines then it can lay mines but the mines are not needed to maintain a minefield.

For ACMs, just disband them in port with some fuel at the base. Supply and mines are not needed. As stated earlier, each ACM will maintain 150 mines.
