I'm attempting my first attack on Poland.

As I'm nearing the end, I'm at about 13 percent casualties, which seems high.

It seems like my troops to the north and south are the ones getting most bogged down in attrition. In fact, I managed to get several trapped to the south.

Divisions to the west and southwest seem to have more armor and are making more progress. I'm never sure how many troops to leave behind in blitzkrieg attacks and how many I should stop to attempt to destroy.

I'm approaching Warsaw and it's touch and go whether I'll take it by the end of the scenario. Either way I'll probably end up an objective or two short.

Any tips or strategies?

I wouldn´t worry too much about my casualties for your first game.

You need to focus on the fact that you won´t win the scenario by eliminating Polish units. You armour and motorized units should bypass enemy units, and make deep penetrations behind the Polish defences. This has the dual effect of the having the Polish retreat some units from their defence lines, and giving the rest supply issues. Even if your fast units are cut off from supplies for a single turn, you should not worry too much, as they are still much more powerful than any Polish units.

Your infantry should be used to secure the supply lines to you faster units and encircling Polish units defending VP locations and important bridge crossings. You are in no hurry to reach any VP location, except Warsaw, so wait a few turns, after encircling Polish units, before you launch you assault against the now supply-depleted units.

This advice might be obvious , so if you need something more specific, please say so

No not obvious at all. I suspected I should untether my armor and motorized units and be much more agressive but wasn't sure how it would affect supply. But using infantry in the way you suggest makes perfect sense.

I has the same experience in the first scenario of the First Panzer Army game of Case Blue. I failed miserably the first time when I was too worried about securing supply lines and destroying every unit. When I pushed armor as fast as possible the Soviets fell completely apart.

I'll restart with this strategy. Should be a lot more fun! Thanks!

One question. Seems like the attacks from the north and south will get bogged down but most of the thrust from the large mobile groups will come from the west and southwest, right?

I actually played this scenario a few weeks ago, and my approximate line of advance for my Panzer/motorized units was:

3rd Army attacked along the road between the Wkra and Drweka rivers toward Sierpc->Modlin->Warsaw, keeping enough infantry behind to ensure the Polish units would not capture German cities. I believe 3rd Army was actually first in the suburbs of Warsaw, so don´t disregard them :)

4th Army bypassed Bromberg and followed the southern bank of the Vistula river, and then an attack across Bzura river at Lowitz, then Warsaw

8th and 10th Army had the an identical mission: Penetrate the Polish defences as fast as possible and force at least one crossing at Warta, Zdunska Wola, Widawa or Wielun. I crossed at Widawa, skirted south of Lodz and toward Warsaw.

14th Army was used to encircle Katowice and Krakau, thereby hindering a retreat of the mass of Polish units to reinforce Warsaw.

Brilliant! I'll give this a try. This definitely helps me visualize things a lot better. Thanks!

It pretty much comes down to taking Warsaw . . . while also taking other objectives. Fourth Army takes the advance from the northwest. and Tenth Army from the Southwest via Radom. Speed takes precedence over combat. Bring up infantry to surround the pockets, soften the hard nuts with artillery - never to be underestimated - and keep the panzers in motion. Bypass fortresses. Fourteenth Army should use the same stance against Krakow, and Eighth against Lodz. If the BEF invades Gdynia, play rope-a-dope with it. Focus on the calendar. No Warsaw; no win.

So, just beat Poland, 3 turns early, and saw that I had left the rail link to the evac open the whole game, and evidently 357,000 poles escaped... will all of them be waiting for me in France?

@BrotherJayne: I can´t remember the exact numbers, but you will face a maximum of 5 Polish divisions in France. With 357,000 evacuated, that is probably the number you should expect.

Used the above strategies and did pretty well. Had a massive force attacking Warsaw on the 23rd and needed probably one more turn to take it. And I forgot to use commander cards (doh!) which I'm sure could have helped me win it a few turns earlier.

On to France -

Does it work the same historically? The Allies rush north while the Germans blast through the Ardennes?

Oh, you were playing the campaign? Then you casualties matter a lot more :) Hope they didn´t get above 10%

Most of the time it will work more or less historically, but that depend on the variant. You might get unlucky and have Panzer Group Kleist deployed further north or the Dyle plan will be cancelled. I suggest reading up on the variants in the manual to get some idea of what you might experience.
