Ok, does anything like this actually exist or has anybody even thought about making it:

-Operational/strategic level

-Turn based/real time (both sides give order to corps/armies/AGs, then turn is executed in real time under AI control)

In other words, what I am envisioning is something like WitE, but with simultaneous turns with your units reacting autonomously during the turn (a bit like in Command Ops).

Units on the map would be divisions/brigades, but the player could give orders to higher echelons if (s)he so wishes (and then AI would execute them the best it could).

Thoughts? Great, meh, the worst idea ever? Would it even be doable?

Been looking for a game like this for a while. Have not been able to find one that fits the description perfectly yet. Closest I have found is Empires of Steel.

I'll give you the reason for this: game developers don't invest the manhours necessary to develop a really challenging AI, as that is the most difficult aspect of making a truly great solitaire wargame. These days it is much easier to produce flashy graphics that it is to making an intellectually-involving game. Today's wargames are primarily designed for the PBEMers. This is part of the reason why "Road to Moscow" became vaporware. RTM is a legend in the minds of a few of us, as it was too ambitious and the idea for it came before the hardware for it developed enough to be able to handle its demands. As for its original idea, it perhaps was more suited for a mainframe to be played in the Pentagon than it was for private consumers.

Woah, what an ambitious game! And these guys were trying to pull it off in 90`s?

What I gathered after some searches, it indeed looks in many ways what I have in my mind. Exept that RtM actually tried do more than I think necessary, I mean having it completely on real time, getting rid of hexes, having units overlap... Well, I have to tip my hat to these people for trying.

The game should be doable now. It would be neat if someone would resurrect it.
Most definitely a dream game.
