Please report your system OS and 32/64 bit [uploaded a beta fix]

Post by Vic »

Hi all,

I am dealing with a difficult bug present in Win8 (not officially supported yet) and in Windows7 if you installed the KB2670838 windows update.

If you have one of the following configurations:

a) Win8, 32bit
b) Win8, 64bit
c) Windows7, 32bit with the KB2670838 windows update
d) Windows8, 64bit with the KB2670838 windows update

Please let me know wich of these configurations you have and if you are experiencing any application crashes, for example after loading a big scenario 2 times and scrolling around a bit

Please also let me know if you DO NOT experience any problems if you have one of these OS configurations.

ps: to check if you have the KB2670838 patch installed or not go to configurarion->remove programs->remove update and check if this KB is in this list or not. If it is there it should be in the "Microsoft Windows" category. You could also check the configuration->windows updates->history of updates screen, the update is about 10 days old.

Thanks for your time. It is appreciated.

Best regards,
Vic

I use Windows 8 64bit.
My system does not have KB2670838
I have a ATI Radeon 7790 video card.

I do keep my system up to date.

I do not have any problems with the game...other then a couple of tank corps in the caucaus [;)]

Apparently the update is supposed to make graphics work a bit better with the new Internet Explorer on non windows 8 systems....so I suspect that Windows 8 users will be unaffected.

Having done some reading on this update, I think that it only affects people with onboard graphics. (no graphics card, the motherboard has the graphics).

And Microsoft recognizes the problem and is going to fix it:

Hi Liquid,

I actually do have hybrid graphics myself. And I had the bug with the Windows Update. Thanks for pointing that MS statement out. Makes me feel a little bit better :)

One things worries me though and that is that i saw at least 2 persons with Windows8 had the same bug as caused by the faulty Windows Update.

Now... i have already been doing quite some testing and the really funny part is i can also solve the bug by compiling Decisive Campaigns in 64bit, when i do this it runs charmingly on my affected system. (However i use some third party liberaries that are x86 so i cannot just role this out like that quite yet and i also dont like having to let Matrix change all the installers either)

This fix with a 64bit build is also the reason i am trying to find out if any 32bit are actually affected at all by this bug.

Best,
Vic

Windows7, 64bit with the KB2670838 windows update

I haven't played CB at all really (bought the bundle and it's all been WtP so far) but just loaded up and did what you asked. No issues.

Win7 64 Bit, I actually reinstalled the game because I thought the crashes were due to something on my side... they happen seemingly randomly when scrolling around - not often enough to make it unplayable if you save often, but still annoying. The KB thingy is installed.

Windows 8 Professional 64-bit on a desktop PC with a dedicated videocard

If I scrolled around while a save was in progress, DCWtP crashed. If I didn't scroll around while the save was in progress, it did not crash in my tests. I attempted to duplicate this behavior in Case Blue but it did not crash.

If you want to get rid of the crashes uninstall the KB thingy untill i found a solution to make the game work with it.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your feedback. It helped!

Anyway. After a week of painstaking work I think i found a complete fix.

Not yet uploaded to matrix, so this can only be tried out by players that know how to manually install a file.

If you can and you have had the bug, please test it out. Preferably with windows8 and/or Windows7 with the KB2670838 installed!

Here is the new Case Blue v1.05j
http://www.vrdesigns.nl/CaseBlue105j.zip

And here the new Warsaw To Paris v1.51j
http://www.vrdesigns.nl/WarsawToParis151j.zip

And let me know if it works for you. Best test to see if the bug is fixed is loading the largest scenario a couple of times and trying to save it while in game.

Best regards,
Vic

Microsoft reintroduced the problem for me overnight, with their latest update, but your new patch seems to have fixed it again.

I play Warsaw to Paris, Windows 7 64 bit.

I have window 7 64 bit - I also have the K thingy update. I've never had a crash in a PBEM game, but have just experienced one with the 1st Panzer linked campaign. I'm not sure if it is related to this or not as today was the first time I've had a crash. I tried loading up the update from Vic above, but had the same bug when I tried to do it. This is the details that it gave me of the original crash in the game, it was during the uploading of the AI turn each time:
See the end of this message for details on invoking

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

@bonners,

That bug seems completely unrelated. But thanks for reporting. A bug is a bug. If possible I would really appreciate it if you can send me a savegame from which this is reproducable to vic@xs4all.nl

best,
Vic
