There isn't a way of harvesting map data from on-line resources and feeding it into the game automatically, is there?

Even a distinction between land and sea would be useful in reducing human labour.

Not automatic but you can stretch a graphic file of choice over your hex map for painting the hexes and disable it again. Or put your hex graphics to transparent and leave the special graphic in.

Actually this last option has not been used by anybody yet.

Best,
Vic

It's going to be tricky going using something like Google Earth for map generation.

The whole subject of flat map projection of a section of surface off of a sphere is really interesting.

The perspective of the viewer is probably going to be the most important aspect. Second most important is the degree of distortion considered acceptable.

Ah, but he is talking about google maps, not google earth. Although some of the same problems still arise, it is pretty easy to harvest a map from google maps. I use printscreen, and then just paste it into my graphics editor.

Well, I guess this is true so the problems are created on Google's end and whitewashed over for you. They are still there, but you don't see them.

Now I wonder what sort of methods Google maps uses to mix up the whitewash.
