USS Croatan?

No, not her. Found the pic on the net, but won't tell since I have already "placed my bet".

Certainly looks like it could be her, during her Vietnam-era aviation transport service.

Looks a bit like the USS Saipan.

USS Arlington AGMR2 , formerly USS Saipan CVL-48 is my guess.

Nope, not any of the above. Wait a little longer before I drop another hint.

While trying to find out what this ship is, came across these pictures of colorized Japanese naval vessels.

To my practiced vintage photo eye, it looks like a 1963-1965 emulsion with medium-bad care since. Other than that I got nuttin' except it looks like a lash-up of some kind. The naval architect responsible for that should find another line of work.

Edit: Oh, wait: is that a lighthouse sticking up through there? If so I somewhat modify my previous testimony, your honor.

Edit Edit: On 400% zoom it looks like another vessel is alongside on the starboard side. With forward kingposts and a big, honkin' ugly funnel.

USNS Card (T-AKV 40). I did n't look at the photo very closely the 1st time. You can clearly see the USNS colors.

BTW , this was the only US "aircraft carrier" sunk in the Vietnam war.

That site won't load for me, but I've seen them before. I found the original site:

AW1Steve is on the money. Proving once again that there are way too many people on this forum with way too much time on their hands... Terminus was close when he recognized that she was one of the aviation transport service carriers, manned by the Military Sealift Command during the Vietnam War. While dockside at Saigon a North Vietnamese frogman planted a charge to her hull and blew a hole in her side, causing her to settle on the bottom. She was raised and repaired though.

The USS Card had a pretty amazing WWII career with her aircraft accounting for a number of sunk UBoats.
