I recall Spence wanted these in the game. It's too bad they're not, I think they're kind of cool. What are they?

Looks like a USN "Bat" missile.

Um, didn't the Germans have radio controoled bombs at Salerno? The Fritz X I think it was.

I wonder if the Radio-guided aspect of the Bat make it the first "smart" bomb. IIRC, the Fritz X was steered optically onto the target (yes-by radio). I dunno how autonomous the bat was by comparison.

They didn't have an example of Project Orcon?

Later models of Project Orcon had an ejection port to shoot the pigeon away from the impact area just prior to detonation...

They also tried a version with a cockroach. The thought was to save space in the guiding mechanism as there'd be no need for an ejection port to protect the cockroach. I mean - everyone knows you can't really kill a cockroach...

The BAT was fire-and-forget. The Fritz X and its ilk were controlled from the launching bomber, by the bombardier following a flare burning in the tail of the weapon.

No, the Bat was RADAR guided. That meant it was a 1st generation "beam rider". As long as the "beam" (a "D" scan or steady) was locked on the target, it would follow. Break the lock , either by some form of jamming (such as chaff or window) or shoot down the targetting air craft and the Bat would lose lock and miss. It's the 1st use of reliable technology that's around even today (such as the Sparrow AtA , or the SA-2). "Fire and forgets" wouldn't be possible till the sixties, and not reliable till the late 70's.

Ironically fire and forgets wouldn't become reliable till about the time that defense systems to deal with them. About the time of Harpoon , or effective Exocets , you then had Aegis,Seawolf,Goalkeeper and CIWS.

Prior to that Navies of the world had, like the USN , adopted "shoot the archer not the arrow" tatics. Simply because that was all they had. The same development to computing power would be both the enablement of "fire and forget" and its solution.

Unless of course one counts sidewinders or Kamikazes. Both were early "fire and forget"
