No, the Bat was RADAR guided. That meant it was a 1st generation "beam rider". As long as the "beam" (a "D" scan or steady) was locked on the target, it would follow. Break the lock , either by some form of jamming (such as chaff or window) or shoot down the targetting air craft and the Bat would lose lock and miss. It's the 1st use of reliable technology that's around even today (such as the Sparrow AtA , or the SA-2). "Fire and forgets" wouldn't be possible till the sixties, and not reliable till the late 70's. Ironically fire and forgets wouldn't become reliable till about the time that defense systems to deal with them. About the time of Harpoon , or effective Exocets , you then had Aegis,Seawolf,Goalkeeper and CIWS. Prior to that Navies of the world had, like the USN , adopted "shoot the archer not the arrow" tatics. Simply because that was all they had. The same development to computing power would be both the enablement of "fire and forget" and its solution. Unless of course one counts sidewinders or Kamikazes. Both were early "fire and forget"
