Being from Portland and going back to see family once or twice a year, I was surprised to find that the only working example of a PT boat anywhere is based in Portland! I had no idea.

http://www.savetheptboatinc.com/index.htm

I should be there in the summer, and I'll be sure to go visit. Apparently they are planning a small museum, but currently the boat can be visited while they work on it.

I have to say, that's a great camo scheme and a fine restoration job.

That's pretty cool.

There is also a PT Museum in Fall River, MA. Pretty sure the PTs they have there are "static displays". IIRC, it is co-occupied by the USS Massachussetts, a Sumner class DD, a fleet submarine from WWII and a KOMAR class missile boat from the former East German Navy. Haven't been there in quite some time but it is surely worth it. And it's not that far (about an hours drive) from the Submarine Museum in New London, CT (which features a fleet boat from WW2 and the USS Nautilus (first atomic powered boat).

I'll be in Boston in late March and I plan to go for sure!

I thought the PT boat was donated to the WW II museum in New Orleans? I live here, but I have never seen it. There is a restored landing ship within sight of the I-5 bridge. Last time I went by and got a look at it, it looked like the paint had been damaged when the nearby hotel burned to the ground a few months back.

An unrestored PT boat that was used for parts in restoring the one they put back in the water was sitting in a vacant lot on the edge of Pierson Field in Vancouver for a while. I don't know what happened to it though. It was next door to the air museum and I heard last week that the National Park Service kicked the museum out of its home with no warning. They had an agreement to keep the space until 2015 or something, but suddenly got notice they needed to clear out in three days. There must be more to that story.

Interesting. Since the site was last updated Jan/13 I assumed it was still there. I didn't read through it though. Will do if I get into town in the next several months.

PT Boats In Museums and Survivors

Of the nearly four hundred PT boats which were built just prior to and during the Second World War, only a handful survive to this day. They are:
  • PT-3 - Privately owned in Pennsylvania as of the late 1990s.
  • PT-8 - Privately owned in Texas.
  • PT-48 - Acquired by Fleet Obsolete in Kingston, NY, awaiting restoration.
  • PT-305 - Acquired by the National World War II in New Orleans, LA, undergoing restoration.
  • PT-309 - Acquired by the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, TX, on static display.
  • PT-459 - Acquired by Fleet Obsolete in Kingston, NY, awaiting restoration.
  • PT-486 - Privately owned in New Jersey, restored to look like PT-109.
  • PT-615 - Acquired by Fleet Obsolete in Kingston, NY, awaiting restoration.\
  • PT-617 - Owned by PT Boats, Inc., and is on display at Battleship Cove, Fall River, MA.
  • PT-658 - Owned by Save The PT in Portland, OR.
  • PT-728* - Owned and operated by Fleet Obsolete in Kingston, NY. Restored by a previous owner in Florida to resemble an eighty-foot Elco PT boat. Available for charter.
  • PT-796 - Owned by PT Boats, Inc., and is on display at Battleship Cove, Fall River, MA.

*denotes that PT-728 is an US built Vosper MTB for the Soviet Navy but never handed over but was given a PT number for book-keeping purposes.
