Status: offline 		I noticed that the game manual indicates that YP are not valid for ASW, though the game doesn't seem to have much issue with me putting them in.

However, I am a few months into a new campaign and have not seen any sort of actual attack done by the YP's (I have had a few get torpedoed....). Is this just a function of them having very low experience to start, or am I wasting my time not actually defending my US coast with those ships?

if not, chances are they won't contribute significantly in a sub hunt

that said, having them torpedoed intead of more valuable targets is also some sort of ASW

Status: offline 		Some escorts are sub killers; they can actually take down a sub with DCs or cause serious damage

Some are simply deterrents; all they do is force subs to submerge and use torpedos. They are there just to disrupt attacks, and take a hit in lieu of a transport

YPs are in the latter category, along with IJN PBs/SCs, Allied AMs, and other not-so-great types

Use accordingly

I think the YP's get replaced when they are torpedoed too (I just noticed a huge influx of them in San Francisco after 4 or 5 of my patrol craft were exploded due to submarines). I don't remember seeing any more on the ship replacement list, but suddenly there were 7 in San Francisco.

The only problem of course is that they have noooooooooooooooo experience at all. Hopefully they start dropping the charges at some point. I'm in February now and I do like to use the converted Clemsons for escorting and HK duties.

While on the topic of ASW, is there an optimal amount of escort ships? 3 or 4 (regardless of size)?



EDIT: I am not sure if they can be added to a transport/cargo TF. I'll have to verify when I get home.

Status: offline 		Put them in an ASW TF, leave them in a port with react on, maybe patrolling a few hexes from base, and back to refuel. No need to do anything else.

Status: offline 		Yeah that's what I do. Until I had more I had them in some groups with other patrol craft as well. I have about 5 or so that scour the western coast of the US (and Dutch Harbour). IIRC there's one in Juneau that needs to be sent down.

Will be nice if they actually drop depth charges. I don't think I have yet seen a YP actually do an attack yet! :P

Status: offline 		I never seen a YP drop a depth charge. But, it is not unusual for a combat report to say that the sub was located by a YP and attacked by another craft.

Status: offline 		Still, I suspect being located by the YP (even if it's a group of just 4 YP) still pushes the sub away. I may try mixing things up somewhat with a variation of subchasers and whatnot once they come down the pipe.

Status: offline 		Naturally I load up my game today and one of my YP TFs gets smacked, losing one each of the two days I played (one even took TWO torpedoes).

Skippers must be getting restless for real targets! Hahaha.

Sunk YPs are not auto regenerated.

They will then react to any good sub sighting (in the react-range) then return to port for resupply, and the only disadvantage is that they only get a few passes over the contact, as they don't carry many DC's.

Status: offline 		Pffft, I'm still waiting for them to work up the nerve to actually attack!!


They are still very low experience. I have one (near Dutch Harbour) that now exceeds 30/30, but the sub activity up there is non-existent haha. Most are still hovering around 20, which I imagine is the big reason why they typically don't attack (or get out of the way of incoming torpedoes! hahaha)
