I tranferred 36 F4U-1 VF-17 carrier capable aircraft to the Bunker Hill, which should have totaled the aircraft on board to 90. However, when checking the total complement it shows 90/180 in red as the total on board when there are 90 . I cannot find anything in the manual which explains this. I'm playing with all patches including Patch 07 1123d. Any reason for this?

The F4U-1 is not carrier capable, check in the in game database. Non carrier capable aircraft count as 3 or 4 aircraft each on the load screen.

The good Captain is correct as far as scen1 goes and the penalty for loading them on a CV.

There may be a discrepancy in your ability to have CV trained pilots flying a non CV aircraft, usually USMC squadrons,

Can a plane become Carrier Capable? (I suppose that doesn't make much sense in hindsight)

Perhaps I am thinking that a Carrier Capable squadron can become Carrier Trained somehow?

You can train a group to become carrier trained by staying 90(i think) days on a carrier.

Its a bit abstract as the unit becomes carrier trained and you can change all pilots and the commander as well, and the unit is still carrier trained.
Its the same for the planes. If you change to the early Corsair, a unit stays carrier trained and capable, but won't be able to fly from a carrier.

Thanks I thought that was the reason. Then they should not be "carrier capable"

Both the early version of the F4U and all New Zealand corsairs are not carrier capable. All other models are. You can fly them off the carriers to a land base but not land them or conduct air operations.

Upgrading the squadron to F4U-1As should take care of the issue.

VS6/1 and VF6/2 will never be able to have their numbers increased (These would be orphans from another CV), I would recommend they be withdrawn which should allow their aircraft to help fill out similar squadrons, based on this page they would go to VF71 & VS71.

When in a port with enough supplies and support you should be able to draw on the pools for 12 aircraft of the relevant type if available.
