So in the past two turns as my game playing as the allies i have sunk numerous ships. I waxed the battleship Hyuga, severely disabled if not sunk the mogami, sunk the chokai, sunk the kiso, and sank a destroyer. At a heavy cost though. Prince of Wales has taken two torps, Repulse has also taken two torpedoes and many shells hits along her hull and super structure, also the de ruyter is burning. Then on the eigth turn in one of my subs fired a salvo of eight torps at the hosho and one hit rupturing and exploding her fuel tanks.. if she isnt sunk she will not be fighting for a long time. Has anyone else ever had luck like this, is the Japanese A.I normally this weak or is this just luck?

I think a little of both in your case. I'm a new player, with a vs. AI game at March 28, 1942. In my game, the AI is very careless about operating with surface protection. I've been running surface raiding with light (CL + DD) forces in the DEI since the beginning. Only in the past month has the AI started providing any heavy escorts for its convoys, and I've sunk almost 270 AK/AKLs, plus 29 DD and 80 SC/PB/E. Also, AI is sending carriers into the area with Task Forces of 3 CV + 1 DD. I haven't sunk any of them yet, but did torpedo one with a PT (Even a task force like that still outguns my light forces, since some of the carriers have 6" and 8" guns).

Your sub attacks have a large element of luck, of course. Based on your earlier post, I would say it's luck that you escaped the air attacks. According to The Roi-Namur Handbook on Dating Girls Named Betty*, the Repulse and POW will not be cruising around the DEI for very long, either by your design or by enemy action. See Chapter 4, "How to get F****d without it Feeling Good."

Bottom line - I would say the BB vs. BB encounter was a good fight, magazine hits and sub attacks are luck. The AI is aggressive, but not all that smart.

My 1-1/2 cents worth.

The AI does some odd things sometimes that I don't take advantage of... you will know what they are when they happen...for the most part, they give a decent fight.

The best thing I like about the AI is that it plays at my pace

If Repulse and PoW survive the first day, I usually like to hit the nearest landing area to the north in Malaya.  Prince of Wales is a match for any of the Kongos, and in my first PBEM, I brought one down with little return damage.

To do this, don't refuel before heading up.  Last attempt, I had to may op points and they didn't reach -- with dire consequences.

Depending on which sub you had torp the Hosho, you might've got lucky with a rare working Mk 14!

I have noticed that sometimes the AI will send a BB with meager escorts to invade Davao in the first week of the game. The first time I played, I had camped a couple of S-boats outside of Davao as I had no idea of the historical timetable for Mindanao and I ended up getting lucky, putting Fuso on the bottom and neutering the invasion fleet. The AI never committed enough LCUs after that to take Mindanao. That experience is one of the primary reasons I switched to Ironman - the AI's plan got disrupted and it never adjusted to commit a proper amount of resources to take an important early game objective. With Ironman, it's simply not possible to hold out, no matter how lucky you get - thanks Andy! .

Lokasenna, what is iron man like? Tougher I hope. Does changing the difficulty help make things harder. I currently have it on historical just so I can get use to playing as the allies.

Andy keeps a pretty up-to-date version in the Ironman Japan/Ironman Allies threads in the Scenarios subforum. Basically, the other side gets a bunch of extra ahistorical units (I believe Ironman Japan has 2 KBs to start, plus a bunch of extra CVEs and all of the CVL conversions done on the CS ships already, as well as starting with Yamato, etc.) at the beginning, and receives extra reinforcements without having to pay production costs for them later.

I believe he's also made the scripted moves more intelligent, as part of the installation involves installing his AI files.

As for difficulty, on 'historical' the CPU has no bonuses. On 'hard', the CPU receives logistical bonuses, and on the hardest difficulty it receives logistical bonuses as well as combat bonuses (instant 100% prep, weighted die rolls, etc.). The recommendation for experienced players is to play Scen 1/Scen 2 on Very Hard 2-3 days per month and Hard for the rest, while Ironman on Hard 2-3 days per month and Historical for the rest.
