Playing Sov for first time and had 51 corps HQ disbanded, anyone knows why?

The soviets disbanded their corps hq at the start of the war and subordinated the divisions directly to the armies. Thats why it is that way in the game, too.

They reinstituted those corps hq after a while, but in the game we see them as combat units, not hq units. I wonder what made them do that?

Yes, the Soviets start to disband their Corps HQs on turns 3 or 4. The Soviets had to dissolve the Corps level of command because too many officers were taken out of service during the purge. There just were not enough trained staff officers to manage the Corps - Army - Front command levels. Later on the Soviets began to reorganize the Corps level - although mostly by changing the divisional structures to manage two brigades and concentrating the attached troops to the Corps level rather than the divisional.

I like the pompous Soviet naming of units... their regiments had less than 20 AFVs, while german battalions over 40. Their "new" corps are just 150-200% of a german division.

When disbanded manually, the SU moved to parent HQ. I think the same happens during automatic disband.
