I'd like to get some ground based aircraft to Midway asap. Early in the war when I have 2 carriers, these are the only way to re-base air units long distance over water correct? So I have to empty out the normal carrier planes, load in some land based ones from Pearl, then carry them over to Midway. Is that how it is done?

I wouldn't do it that way. Just load up the air units on to cargo ships with escorts.

only single engine land based air(may be only fighters never tried anything else) can be loaded on carriers.[no dolittle raid}



they count double capacity,but you can fly them off the carrier to an airfield, if you must do this leave some of the carriers air groups onboard to use on the way back.

i have done this to get fighters to canton and midway islands early.

keep in mind they will not pull replacement aircraft out on the islands without 20k or so supplies onhand nor will they have drop tanks without 10k supplies. its hard to fit an air HQ on midway or canton too.

To add to what Rms1pa said. You should have a few 16 kt AKs on the west coast, I prefer to use these for transporting air groups and as supply ships with invasion forces. A bit later you will receive AKVs in balboa (16kts) and another AK @16kts, I'd use these as well. Any air groups transported in this manner will arrive in damaged state, so it will take time for them to repair,so getting additional air support is important. The Yorktown arrives with a VMF squadron on-board, this is a great group to transport to Midway/Canton Island as it's just 18 A/C max and even the buffalo can provide decent bomber defense, just don't expect it to survive enemy fighters. Regardless of which route you go, I'd follow up the Air Groups with supply convoys to get the Islands up to 20k supplies as fast as possible, to allow the groups to resupply with A/C. Also remember that seaplanes can use ship based air support, so stationing an AV/AVD/AVP ship in the harbor, full of supplies and disbanded can augment the ground based air support. Of course ships at anchor in less than size 3 points ARE vulnerable to sub attacks, so stationing a couple of YPS or YMS type ships at the harbor, in asw mode with patrol set to the base hex is a good idea.

If you've got a couple of those small harbor sized ASW ships available, get them to Midway as well (AMc?). They don't have to be in a TF to attack a sub, just be present at the port itself.

I always thought they had to be in ASW mode to attack, otherwise they were in anchored mode? Even if they don't, having them in a TF at the port allows them to gain experience by 'being at sea', so I'd suggest forming them into TFs anyways. they will be vulnerable to naval attack missions, but immune to port attacks. Also i don't think they use fuel if patrolling their home port, but I may be wrong there.

ACM is a dedicated minefield tender most all? can lay mines also when in a minelaying TF. they tend minefields while disbanded in a port with fuel. no other ships do this. a port with a fueled disbanded ACM will not have its minefield degrade. 150 minefield per ACM.

AMc is a fishing boat with machineguns and a paravane for sweeping mines localy some have depth charges. best used in a local minesweeping TF hanging about in ports that tend to be attacked by sublaid mines and SSX.

AMC are (generaly) fast cargoliners given obsolete cruiser guns and some AA some have depthcharge racks. most not all retain some cargo/passenger capacity.

I don't put any of my AMc's in TF's and they still attack subs that nose into the port looking for something to shoot at. Even a couple of them will harass a sub that enters a port; I had all sorts of trouble with midget subs at Madras until I sent a couple of AMc's there. That nonsense stopped right after that.

huh, never had disbanded AMcs react but my common setting for them is 4 in a TF in the port and one or 2 disbanded.
the TFs (even without DCs ) have shot up SSXs.
