The Combined Fleet website has a new article which describes a bit of historical dust-up between one of its sponsors and a guy named Bennett who would like to make a movie about Mitsuo Fuchida.

Apparently the Naval War College Review published both of their articles regarding the leader of the Pearl Harbor strike and his subsequent recollections regarding Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway and the Surrender of Japan on board the USS Missouri. It seems they disagree. I've read Parshall's article about Fuchida's recollections and will confess to not having read the NWCR article of Mr Bennett (the NWCR only comes out 3 times a year so I only check it once a year or so and even then only read the articles that strike my current fancy).

In this article at combinedfleet.com Mr Parshall goes to some length to refute Mr Bennett's contentions and so forth. I found reading it through a bit tedious even though I more or less agree that Mr/Lcdr Fuchida might have added or subtracted a few "facts" to his accounts of certain battles of the Pacific War. But I did find Mr Parshall's: "3 More Whoppers Brought to You by Mitsuo Fuchida" to be very interesting especially since it concerns incidents that have generally escaped attention in English language accounts.

Here's the link to the "3 More..."

Now I have to set Mr Parshall onto some of my enemies!

I seem to remember some doubt as to the reliability of Mr. Fuchida's claims as to historical facts, his personal glorification and that he wasn't on the Mighty Mo for the surrender.

The '3 whoppers' is interesting. The back and forth drivel and affronted egos between the amateur historians not so much.

Until reading this articles I had never heard of "God's Samurai". I assume it has something to do with Fuchida's eventually conversion to Christianity. I was wondering if anyone has read it and if he recounted any other wartime incidents? I would have a few grains of salt handy I suppose but an IJN look (in English) is always worth something.

I believe for most historians "Shattered Sword" was the final nail in the coffin of Fuchida's claims around the battle of Midway at least. It was long suspected that Fuchida had "padded" history but now there is stark "evidence" to prove it.

It seems they disagree.

Indeed. Parshall and Bennett certainly won't be sending Christmas cards to each other.

The "Three Whoppers" material is interesting, especially the one about Fuchida's trip to Borneo after the Tilitjap raid...

What could possibly be gained by making up such an adventure as that? I've seen resume's padded, but that's going a bit far!

I guess I have to agree Jeff, but it makes so little sense. As the author of the rebuttal states, things are so easy to prove or disprove.... Folks never cease to amaze me.

I think the article mentions that in the '60's many made claims that they thought could never be disproved. Modern researchers plus the release/finding of raw data such as ORB & TROM (plus the forms in Mr Parshalls rebuttal) can now confirm or disprove these stories.

There also seemed to be a bit of an industry at one time of publishing this style of memoir without doing much checking, also Caiden's work on Saburu Sakai springs to mind where Sakai claims much of the book is inaccurate.

I would even suggest that while Shattered Sword is a great work, something will surface to prove that part of it is not correct or has been missed.
