I am very frustrated with that at times it can take so long time for a unit to begin build trenches. In my current game I have had units in Warsaw for over 20 turns in a row and the hex still have no trench at all. The hex have been attacked several times but by no means every turn. Most of the time it has been the same unit in the hex.

I read in a previous thread that one of the reasons to keeping trenches in captured hexes was because there had been fighting in a hexes and the area devastated by warfare could be used for improvised entrenchment. Then the same should apply to hexes attacked but at the moment attack seems to disrupt the units ability to entrench.

Besides. It is my belief that a unit defending against attack after attack would entrench fast. Those soldiers would be motivated to dig in. One could of course argue that the attacks would stop intricate defensive trench systems but they would surely reach trench level one fast.

A unit staying in a hex for one turn should gain first level of entrenchment automatically regardless if it is attacked or not.

I would tend to agree with you, that by at least the 2nd turn, a unit should be at entrench level 1.
