Interesting past few turns

Post by coreyjones »

So if you all saw an earlier post i did I got into it big with three american cv's in which i lost kaga and i believed i sank lexington, hornet, and yorktown. about three turns ago air recon spots that pain in the butt lexington just south off the coast near Soerabaja(about seventeen turns after the fateful battle). So everything i have in the area strikes against it. Zero's, Betty's, Nicks and i just cant seem to hit the damn thing. I get one 60 kg bomb hit on the deck which does nothing. Luckily I had kurita and his four Mogami's based out of Soerabaja and i full speed raced them towards the tf. Next turn Kurita engages lexington, Pensacola, and the Preston. Preston gets shelled hard and eventually sinks from Zero's raping it later on in the day as it's dead in the water. But FOR THE LIFE OF ME the mogami's barely get in any threatening shots in on the Lexington... and even though they have the numerical Superiority and i set them to absolute, kurita gets in to about 15,000 yards and then slowly breaks off. Most of the shell hits on Lexington fell on the deck and superstructure... i am cool with damage i guess.... It keeps her off the seas. Next night kurita engages again and gets one hit below the waterline and again shots all over her superstructure and deck. Well later in the day i get a nice surprise from American Cv's off of torishima and they bomb a tanker task force headed home from fueling rabaul.... about five tankers sunk... I am so fustrated i want to throw something... So many CV's in the water and i dont have any carriers in either areas [:@] all of my heavies are in the shipyard refitting [:@] !!!!!! I have a light carrier cv that could take on the one cv near torishima... but is it worth racing it up from Rabaul and losing all that fuel and i might not even get the attack in?

What's the date in your game, out of curiosity?

1) Where the hell is Torishima? Is it near Rabaul?

2) You used your carriers a few turns ago. You fired your bullets, and the gun is empty. Now its the Allies turn to shoot. They do so with the advantage of knowing where (most) of your carriers are, since you exposed them, and may also know you have some damaged. They can now use their carriers with some element of safety in the engagement that justifies their existence and furthers their strategic goals. Every sword has two edges. If you hadn't made your carrier strike, you may have protected your tankers, either by presence or by the enemy being in doubt about your whereabouts. Having done the strike, are you better off trading some tankers for carriers? Only you can decide that, and appreciate that there will be a tradeoff for every move you make.

3) If you have to go "racing up" to hunt for a phantom, will that leave you more exposed near Rabaul? More questions, more decisions....

That is in summary, the difference between an amazing, one-of-a-kind game and all the mediocre titles you can get these days

It is August of 42. Torishima is just a little south of iwo jima and ha ha jima. I have another question. I have a chutai of nells based out of wake that search in arks east of the island and i also have them set to naval attack as well. They suppossedly find enemy ships all the time but not once in the past six months have they ever made a strike? could people enlighten me on maybe why?

against carriers? without escort? Long range missions?...mmmm.... no way those boys will attack enemy CVs that far away!

However check the leader's stats of that chutai... for naval bomber leaders the best stats are Inspiration and aggressiveness

another question.... Would an aircraft fuel explosion from a 250kg bomb be enough to down a carrier? I know thats what ruined the taiho.

Japanese ships in general have worse damage control than Allies, that is historical

and all depends on how lucky or unlucky you are; a bad roll and fire will get out of control and yes, it will go down;

but that said, I just recently had a small Ansyu-C merchant get a pounding by a submarine: 1 torpedo hit + at least 3 penetrating shell hits and it still made it back to port next turn (thankfully close to mainland).

well i hit hornet during the first phase of my carrier battle and it said it hit the aircraft fuel.... and during the next days battle she was gone and it was only lexington and yorktown.. So i assumed i sunk... considering that was the only bomb hit on hornet... is it possible she burned up.

Not an american one. Not usually anyway. You can be very lucky and get a storage, magazine or fuel explosion, but that's very rare with a 250kg bomb

possible, but very very rare. Probably the damage was quite severe and she retired earlier than her sisters

funny thing though is during the night both Task Forces ran into each other immediately on the surface. There would have been no where for her to go. I had the area blanketed with ships and planes.. from the east i had my light cv's that would have blocked her off and from the west i had multiple tf's with floatplane searches going everywhere.

I will not be too sure, it is possible, but she might have left before the 2nd battle... as soon as a ship gets a high level of damage, it will be dropped from the CV TF, and become a "escort TF" and then it will leave to the closest port

You can try to predict to which port it went... then send a submarine with float planes and make it do recon

In the real world, Lexington sank because of uncontrolled fires. I actually had it happen in a game, too, except it was to sub torps starting fires rather than bombs and aerial torps.
