Seems like I managed to get it working after 1.5h of messing around.

My system is Win 7, 64 bits

- uninstall DW and expansions
- remove all DW related entries from your registry
- go to control panel, windows features
- turn off IE9, Windows media player & windows media center
- reboot
- go to control panel, windows features
- turn on IE9, Windows media player & windows media center
- reboot
- update .NET if needed
- install the game and all expansions
- update manually, not via the patcher

this solved the startup crash for me, maybe it can be added in the FAQ? Would have saved me about 1.5h

Installation is really finicky. I was fiddling a bit and managed to overwrite some data I had no backup on. So I uninstalled/reinstalled. Then the game didn't start any more. So I had to uninstall/reinstall again. This time it did start.
