I wanted to give thanks to Matrix Games, Slitherine, and all the developers who make these amazing games. Also I want to thank the community for being so helpful.

It may seem sappy to write this, but allow me to explain myself.

I've been a huge fan of strategy games all my life, which led me to play paradox games. Then I wanted something deeper. I bought Battle Academy and I was hooked. And I wanted more, and you all delivered. I am a beginner grognard. I'm still learning all the ropes and tactics, but it's FUN. I read all the manuals daily. I read the boards, and it sounds weird but its exciting.

Another reason why I want to thank everyone is well, i'm an American. And in America, you get taught really awful history. You're taught (at least I was) that the US saved the world from all evil. Things like European History are brushed over quickly to get to American Greatness, which is sad, mainly because i'm quite the socialist.

Without these games, I would have never delved into the TRUE history of the wars that have occurred. I would have never learned how the Russians sacrificed so many lives to save us in WW2. Of course in America they don't teach that because they were the EVIL EMPIRE USSR COMMUNISTS. I would have never learned of the contributions of other nations on how they saved us from fascism. Playing these games made me read so many history books from other perspectives.

Hell, I was taught that the US singlehandedly saved the world in WW1. There was no mention of other countries that were involved besides France and the UK. I didn't know Serbia was involved. I didn't know a lot of things. I was quite ignorant, I still am.

Don't get me started on how they taught us about Napoleon, they barely did.

These games are educational as they are fun. Besides the history factor, they really make you think about true strategy. They put you in the minds of those who commanded these wars and the sacrifices they made. They also bring to light how many people have died in these needless disgusting wars. It's sad when you think about it. Even when I lose a unit in a game, I feel terrible. Maybe i'm just weird.

Anyway, I have really started to push these types of games to my friends, because I know they will appreciate it. Modern gamers (i'm an old fart at 30) just love flashy modern warfare with amazing 3D graphics and crap like that. Which is fine, I play those games sometimes too, but they really don't educate you about history, and it makes death seem like its nothing at all. I rue the day when teenagers think that what happened in Black Ops 2 was completely true.

Last but not least, the community. I've never been in a gaming community as friendly as this, as helpful as this. I wish there were more people who posted, but once again, these are "niche" games.

Over the Christmas sale, i've bought many games to support the publishers and developers because they deserve it. They are so dedicated to the games they make and are ACTIVE in the community. They patch for free, add new stuff and listen.

I'm sorry for the long post, but I just really wanted to let you all know that every single one of you is appreciated. Keep up the great work. Also make detailed tutorials, detailed AARs (text and video please for idiots like me!) and moveable windowed modes in your games so you can attract new players ;p)

Games like Battle Academy, Unity of Command and Panzer Corps are gateway drugs to grognarding. If you have friends who aren't sure, please tell them about these games. They'll become one of us soon enough.

In closing:

Thank you everyone.

I buy a lot of stuff to support the hobby as well :)

Thank you for your interesting post... and I am totally in agreement about the way History is taught in the US these days. This is coming for a recently retired Social Studies teacher! Every year it got tougher and tougher to teach history my way until I just got totally disgusted and retired earlier than facing more dictates, more consultants with clipboards walking in all the time to check on you, plans to put cameras in the classroom so the Principal could spy on you at will and so forth. I could write a book about the state of teaching in America :(

Anyway, you nailed the inadequacies of the present system.

Welcome to the forums!

50 million+ dead Russians starved to death executed or sent to work to death in the gulags by their own wonderful socialist regime might disagree with you. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was probably the most evil government mankind has ever known when it comes to the murder of their own people. Communist China murdered in excess of 70 million of their own, but on a per capita scale a much larger percentage of the total population was killed in Russia.

The fact the people of Russia fought so gallantly and hard against the Fascists had nothing to do with saving the rest of the world or saving their own socialist government, it had everything to do with saving themselves from certain death at the hands of the Nazis. Had the Fascists not been so brutal themselves, the Russian people would have welcomed them with open arms as saviors liberating them from the hell that was unrestrained socialism.

Jim

Jim Burns: Surprising that we, (you and I), learnt this, (ref ur post), from our American History classes, but I must say, my classes were during WW2. Todays young people, 50 years young, unfortunately don't get much History, unless they watch the somewhat questionable History (?) channel. Just an old mans 2 pesos........

What "history"? Last I saw it was some stupid Pawn Shop crap. I haven't seen anything about real history in ages. They used to show some pretty good stuff about ancients and medieval times. Now it's all modern day crap that ain't history it's just crap.

To bad that our educational system has come to that in most areas if not all. Sad.

I doubt America is much different from anywhere else, or at least anywhere else where the syllabus is controlled mostly by academics rather than the government (note the 'mostly'; I doubt it's 'exclusively' anywhere).

Friendly advice; if you feel like that now make sure you have a good divorce lawyer on standby BEFORE buying War in the Pacific!

Too late I already bought it! But I still have to train. I only bought it because of the sale and I know by the time the next sale comes I'll be a grognard pro. I can't wait to learn. I just need to train harder and faster.

I hear its an amazing game! I can't wait.

More gratuitous America bashing. By an American no less.

In our suburban Chicago public school district, my kids were taught history just the opposite: no trace of American exceptionalism, no "America the Beautiful," America the Ugly in fact.

And as if "awful history" is just an American thing. Um, no.

When I raised the subject of Napoleon with a younger French programmer colleague, he replied: "Napoleon? Don't know much about him, just that he lived a glamorous life."

I've taught college in the Philippines. There, other than the War in the Pacific and the Japanese invasion and occupation of the Philippine Islands, my students knew little to nothing about the wider war. They had never heard of the Nazi death camps and the Jewish Holocaust.

I've read accounts of similar ignorance in other countries. It's human nature to focus on one's own narrow corner of the world, and for history to be taught in a distorted, nationalistic, self-centered way.

No, "awful history" is not just an American thing.

But cultural self loathing? Yeah, that's increasingly fashionable here in America (and elsewhere?).

In my wasteful youth, I used to think and buy like that.

But now I can no longer afford it. If I have no time for or prospect of ever playing something, I won't purchase it, no matter the interest.

So for example, in part to show my support, I have an itch to buy the JTS/HPS Napoleonic Battles series; but I don't. I own all 12 current titles in their American Civil War series, any one of which I would play before any of the Napoleonic series.

Further down the queue, I have JTS/HPS The Renaissance, TOAW III (VCO), WITP:AE, John Tiller's Campaign Series (Rising Sun), and a love/hate relationship with a few others (including some I've uninstalled out of disgust).

My gaming plate is quite full. Way, way more than enough to keep me satiated for the remainder of my days. I refuse to spend needlessly any more of my hard-earned money on games I know (if I am honest with myself) I will never play.

Well it's only wasteful if one can't afford something. My main hobbies are gaming, reading and audiobooks. I can afford to indulge, so I do to some degree. I can afford to frequent my local butcher, even though a trip to Walmart would save me money. I go to this butcher not just for better cuts of meat but also to support his business. I have friends who spend much, much more on golfing, for example. Now that IS a waste...of everything.

We are getting waaay off topic.

Thanks Matrix/Slitherine...

Most of our elite do want everyone in America to be equal(no score keeping at children's ball games). But they don't seem to mind letting the nutters excel.

Sheesh, it meant what it meant.

I know that. I am thankful to my high school history teacher, Mrs. Duke(RIP). She instilled in me my huge love of all history.

After WW2 we (Americans) did ot want to dwell on the dark days of the war, soo......we didn't teach it to our students. I got chewed out by an English teacher for reading and writing a book report on "War is Hell", (WW2 true story). Just for spite and being Hard-headed yankee I wrote my next 7 reports on war stories, fact and fiction. Got an 'A' for the course after changing instructors. A lot of people who were of the "Greater Generation" who fought in the war did not want to see it in print, they had had enough, so de-facto censorship. Remember that history can be hard on those who lost love one and friends, so can we blame them for what I call 'Censorship'? What I don't care about is the fact that we don't teach it any more. Hell some kids today don't even know how we got the South West or for that matter Florida. They don't even know we bought Alaska, that our neighbors in Canada were once French or even English for that matter. Ask them, (kids today), who fought in the Revolution and Half will tell you North and South.

Ah well my soapbox just broke and "my wife says cut it short old man"......snip-snip-snip

When I arrived on the Navajo rez to start teaching, I had the great idea of using computer wargames to make history come alive for the kids. I had tentative agreements with Matrix and HPS to allow me a free site license to use their games as long as one copy was purchased. Guess what... the whole idea that a "teacher" would try to get "non-approved" software into their computers to support their teaching got shot down immediately... "Use what we tell you to use" :(

Of course, as the years progressed, things got steadily worse until I was banned from showing movies like "13 Days - The Cuban Missile Crisis" and limited to no more than 1 five minute video clip (which had to be approved by the Principal). My class was the most popular in the school until the last year, when I was so tied down with administrative dictates about how everything had to be taught (six weeks on Economics, but only 4 days allocated for World War II). Computerized "pacing guides" tied to computerized lesson plans insured that all of the state mandated standards were taught on the approved schedule. I might mention that many of those committee and consultant developed standards I felt were completely inappropriate for my students. A classic case of everyone wanting to get their pet topics into the mix. Computer tracking allowed them to enforce their dictates.

That was my last year, I retired at age 64 when I had thought I would teach till I dropped dead.

Turned out great for me as I'm having a fantastic retirement, but it is just too bad that dedicated teachers are being driven out of the profession. To succeed as a teacher today you have to be a "type A" personality that enjoys being told exactly what to do out of a thick rulebook. If you are innovative or creative, you will definitely be out of step with the "improvement plan". It's been two years now and virtually all of the teachers that I worked with have quit and gone elsewhere or retired. Out of the 30 teachers who were hired with me, I was the last one remaining in the district after 4 years. Turnover runs between 50 and 75% per year due to the abuse teachers have to endure. If I had stayed another year, I'd bet the stress would have killed me.

I have to think that there is a definite plot to destroy public education in America and to shift the funding to subsidize private schooling for the elite at public expense. Those who can't afford to buy a good education will end up in a ghetto of underfunded public schools because the lower classes are more easily manipulated when we keep them in ignorance.

Just my perspective

Unfortunatley history is not the most popular class in schools.

Unfortunately so true. I believe it's even worst nowadays than how it was in my time. But nonetheless I always felt that History never caused much interest in the great majority of students. I'm speaking about high school of course.
