I,m having an issue with the selection of targets in my game aginst Andy.
Here's the situation:
I have a squadron of Emilys Nells and betties on Luganville.and a squadron of Emilys and betties on Savaii. Up until 3 or 4 turns ago I also had LCU's on Nadi beside the Suva base.
The problem is that he has PT boats on Nadi and Suva so if I set my LBA's to naval the game insists on attacking the Well capped PT boats....even when there are more valid targets around as he has small transport convoys travelling to Nadi all the time, even closer to the bombers??
So I asked Andy about this and he claims it was because of the LCU's on Nadi raising the detection level of the PT's. Well since then I have removed the LCU's from Nadi and excluded the Nadi/Suva group from my search patterns and STILL the PT's are getting detected (how??) and my squadrons continue to be mauled by irrelevant little PT bastard targets while (last turn) three other more valuble transport groups (too far away for his air cover) are just ignored.

All's I can say is WTF?? Basically these PT's are rendering all air ops in that whole quadrant useless...

Try a different approach.
Sweep the hex and kill his fighters. Additionally set some fighterbombers on naval and let those attck the PTs. Bombard your opponents airfields and make him think twice about having planes there.
Then send in a DD-TF. Take care it is a night with much light so the PTs won´t sink your DDs.
All this might help. It could of course end in total disaster.

In theory, you could recon his bases with CAP, and your long-range bombers should not launch, because they have not enough escort (but it will probably do not work, when you want ).
Also you can try to set your bombers really high - they tend to frequently not be able to find TFs that way.

Just get rid of this PTs by standard means (raid by DDs, or strafing by FBs).

There were tests done, long ago, when search arcs were not working, and it seems planes search whole circle anyway (just the arc more frequently). You can have lots of air units set for search (for example those NELL units), and submarines can also detect those PTs.

Finally you can try night attacks, but they can be launched only on short range.

Count the range to the PT's and set your bombers to 1 hex less.

This may see you miss TF coming from out of range but will see your aircraft leave the PT alone.

Teorically, if your DL on those PTs is high enough to detect them as PT and not as normal ships, the Betties should not launch.

The key is the difference between the DL over the PTs and the DL over the other TFs...

And, If you have some zeros to spare put LRCAP in the hex over the PTs. Then sweep with one zero unit. The LRCAP will both help fight the fighters in the sweep and then provide good escort for your bombers as well. (not always but most always) The benefit is that the LRCAP will not fly and fight as regular escort and not get slaughtered like regular escort. The trade off is fatigue.

Too far away for LRCAP I,m afraid. I do need to check if my subs in the vicinity are detecting them. Bombers are flying at 8000 feet using torps so to come all that way down to attack PT's...
