9 Flattops in one photo!

They count the CVN and LHD but not the LPD. Plus, they note there are two more CVN out of photo across the way, one refitting and one building.

Home for Christmas: 9 Flattops at Norfolk

I see lots of tips for bar workers in my old home town of Virginia Beach. You could always tell when the fleet was in. Half the school teachers were out looking for their fighter pilot, years before "An Officer and a Gentleman."

The CVNs could be underway in less than 1 hour and probably a CGN to go along with each if need be. The comments on the link show how few know how fast those big things are and how quickly they can get underway (the ones with the bow pointing out would be gone real quick, no tugs needed). They think a suitcase nuke will sink them all!?! Really??

The big concern about Norfork has always been blocking the entrance. Nukes were always less of a concern than mining or some other form of blockin (dropping a bridge, sinking a large ship, etc.) But there is no other CVN capable base on the east coast .Mayport has the room , and has always had CV's , but does not have nuke support.

CGNs are thin on the ground these days.

I disagree wholeheartedly that they could be gone, from cold iron, in less than an hour, but that gets into areas best not discussed here. Any gas turbine ship could be out faster than a nuke. And as always delays in getting underway are not usually propulsion related.

Norfolk is very open in comparison to some Navy harbors. Pearl's channel is very narrow for example, and Charleston NB was up the Cooper River a long, long way. The Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel was designed so the two tunnel sections were long enough to allow the Navy to come and go even if the bridges were dropped. Hampton Roads itself is huge.
