Allied repair in shipyards

Post by garywjamison »

Fellow Gamers:

I am having significant trouble repairing battleships that have taken flotation damage. Pearl Harbor is overloaded. Only Seattle and Capetown appear to have any real success repairing torpedo damage. What am I doing wrong?

Gary,
Here's a short answer. If you want a much longer and more complete answer, Alfred has a Ship Repair 101 thread that's very good, but which might take you quite a bit of time to digest.
Pearl will be overloaded after almost any decent first turn attack by the Japanese. As a rule, most Allied players will move damaged battleships to the West Coast (when they are sea-worthy enough to make the trip, when the Allies are sure the KB is gone, when they've set up at least some ASW support for the trip, etc, etc.) The West Coast has several shipyards large enough to handle battleships (Seattle, LA, San Francisco, Mare Island an Portland can all handle at least 2 BBs each) - just don't overload the yards there, too - spread your damaged ships around. Also, make sure not only to put your ships into port, but to put them into Shipyard Repair mode once they are there - otherwise your damage, if major, will never get fixed. I think this may be your current problem. Anyway, good luck and have fun with the game!

Repair all minor (non major) damage using pierside repair mode, move the BB's back to the West coast once the system damage is zero, all non major float damage is repaired and major float damage is <50. Make sure you set them to cruise mode when moving back to the west coast. BB's with low levels of major damage will be better off repaired at Pearl (say <15pts). Make sure you've got repair set on for the Pearl Harbour shipyard if it was damaged in the attack.

And read Alfreds ship repair guide [:D]

Generally good advice, especially about reading Alfred's guide.

But repairing system damage at pierside may or may not be optimal. It depends what else is going on in the yard. And you don't need system damage to be zero to have a quite safe transit if flooding is also reasonable.

And don't forget the East Coast yard. It's the biggest in the game for either side, a monster. You can move there off-map from several directions. You need to figure the transit time trade off versus the huge yard capacity and thus speed of repair. UK yard is also quite nice.

All good advice unless you are a JFB and then you have to read Alfred's guide and explore you repair options available to you and maybe even upgrade some of the yards between the HI and the SRA to handle the ships that are going to be damaged by sub losses.
