Hi Folks,

I went out to Andrew Toppin's most excellent web site to review some data from DANFS and it was down. I recalled that the last time I tried to go there is was down. Was this bad luck or has the site gone the way of the Dodo?

Cheers,
Guy

Andrew Toppan was one of the founders of Usenet's sci.military.naval, but he's been gone from there for years. He got fed up with the spam and trolls who ruined what was in the 1980s and early 90s the preeminent forum for professionals of all stripes to exchange ideas and information. I wouldn't be surprised if he got to the same place with the Web and left.

It seems to be gone. I can't say I'm surprised; the site hadn't been updated in years. If you need the DANFS, the Naval History and Heritage Command has it at http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/

To bad it's gone as even without support it had many pics.

Yeah,

Andrew used to have kill two or three trolls before breakfast time. I recall the early days of Usenet before everyone and their pet gerbil had a Internet account. sci.mil.nav and soc.hist.w.ww2 used to be the places to go for a military education. Today it's pretty much the same revisionist bs in over half the posts. Oh well, I'm a grumpy old man I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Cheers,
Guy

For pictures of USN ships, I don't think anything beats navsource.org.

For WW2 cruisers and battleships, the WW2 Cruisers site has many excellent pictures. Just wish they had destroyers, too.

Most of these sites are maintained by volunteer individuals, who like everyone else get old, and the sites pass away unless someone else is willing and able to take over. All is not lost, though. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine archives old websites, and you can sometimes retrieve dead sites from them.

The "About the Site" hotpoint gives a hint.
