It's the first time I see this message in a combat report.

Katagi I. in a A6M3a Zero makes head on attack ... forces B-24D Liberator out of formation
Oda J. in a A6M3a Zero makes head on attack ... forces B-24D1 Liberator out of formation

What has been the effect on combat of the behaviour of these 2 brave pilots and in which circumstances this attitude appears ?

Once a plane is forced out of formation it becomes more likely/easier to attack.

What's the date in your game?

I see that massage few times in `42 so it is not date related.

It is some king of "play chicken" game.
Japanese pilots not trying to ram bomber they only pretending and forcing that way enemy plane to maneuver to avoid collision. Once bomber is out of formation it cant count for anther bombers fire support so he is easier to shot down

Another realistic "Easter Egg" of chrome..
Saburo Sakai wrote how the B 17 was near impossible to bring down until the Japanese pilots learned to attack it from head on.
Later B 17's tried to counter this weakness with a nose turret, as did the B 24.

The messages so far speak about Liberators and B-17s. Do all level bombers (light, medium) benefit from the box formation or is it only heavy bombers? The manual is silent on this issue.

I should think they do benefit IF they have guns that can be directed to the side - i.e. side mounted or ball turret mounted guns.
