Turn 2 of the 1943-45 grand campaign, Axis AI, Soviet human. Updated to the latest patch.

The AI managed to inflict 32,000 casualties for the loss of 11 men. Wow - a pretty impressive achievement!

Or maybe that's attrition??? I haven't played the game in almost a year...

Looks like attrition.

There is a good thread with some info how the casualties are reset - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3215711

Even if it's attrition, it looks seriously out of balance.

Yeah, look at the casualties per turn that I have compiled from my MP game. I was expecting 3:1 casualties (Russian to German) but with similar distribution of killed to wounded for both sides. It looks like killed are close to 1:1 sometimes, while the Soviet wounded are more common than German wounded. Does it mean that you get more wounded from attrition and retreats, than from combat?

Not sure what you mean here, but just in case you don't see other side attrition here.

The losses screen is very cryptic and one can never be sure what it shows at given moment in game :) That's bad because it should present easily understandable information.

What this shows is that the Germans lost 11 men in either an attack during their turn or probably from an interdiction attack on one of their units. They probably didn't attack anywhere. There logistics phase losses are already cleared out so all you are seeing is your logistics phase losses, which are a combination of front line attrition and damaged elements being destroyed. You never see the similar losses by your opponent because the current turn losses are cleared after this initial viewing of the losses. What you in this opening screen is just losses during the movment/combat phase of your opponent's turn plus your logistics phases losses. During your turn you see losses from your movement/combat phase. No way to see your opponent's logistics phase losses.

But they do get added to the total losses value?

Think same situation in Axis data. I play by looking at the cumulative losses only; turn-by-turn losses confuse me. But there are many clues to evaluate different battle tactics besides "losses."
