If you know your Japanese, it's not hard at all.

Does anyone know how they were fired off? Was it a gunpowder charge?

Japan had both catapults - Type №1 was pneumatic and Type №2 on gunpowder.

And one was experimental Spring catapult, fitted on Yura in 1930 and removed after 7 months of accidents, called Kayaba Shiki hakkan sokushin sochi.

A little off-topic:

In terms of float planes; "Jake" is the best overall FP... any reason why they kept using "Petes" ?
I am guessing that maybe it was smaller and therefore able to fit easier

EDIT: I found the aswer; "Because of its outstanding maneuverability, it was occasionally operated as a fighter and dive-bomber in support of amphibious operations, when no enemy fighter opposition was anticipated"

I know that the Mogami used gunpowder-propelled catapults before conversion, but after it's conversion I wasn't sure. I looked all around and could not find any info on this. So I asked the question over at j-aircraft, this is the answer I received.

According to Lacroix and Wells, the MOGAMI class were equipped with Kure Type No.2 catapult Model 5 developed in 1937. These were gunpowder-propelled catapults. There is no record of upgrade according to L&W, and compress air-driven catapults were only use on submarines and OYODO. - Ed Low

Not off topic at all. Glad you found an answer.

In my game I always keep the Petes on usually slow ships for ASW and spotting for BB they are ok for that - remember like the game they probably had a lot in the pool - nice pic.
