Hello All,

My map goes white with a red X when it seems a lot is happening. The game continues and I can save it, then reload, but it goes bad again before too long.

BTW: Running Windows 7.

GFX card should be ok. Usual things like current drivers for the GFX card, check that your direct X version is up to date or check your .net install for updates.
Cant think of anything else but im sure that someone can point you in the right direction, there usually pretty good for help around here.

Oh and for the graphic image shrinkage try this

Darkspire: Thanks for the help. OK, it looks like I have everything up to date and I also rebooted after updating the graphics driver. Still got the red X. Here's the original popup, which may help.

Would seem you need to update the game, I think, see the post about the german version in the tech fourm.

I have had that happen quite a few time in various versions. As far as I remember, I can usually save the game, exit/kill, and continue the game with no issues once the game is finished starting up again.

Darkspire: Thanks for the response. Unless I missed something, which is possible, I think I updated to the latest beta (v1510 beta). [Edit: Will check the German version post. Thanks.]

Bingeling: You're right. I can save and run it again, but 10-15 minutes later the Red X of Death happens again. Kind of puts a damper on the gaming experience.

It is a tad worse when it is a habit rather than an annoying exception. When I have had them they have not returned (soon anyways), and I have been relieved they were not worse.

I would look at checking for updates to the full list of involved graphics components. In addition to the game, graphics driver, .net, directx. And anything else you can think of. Probably you won't find a whole lot, though.

As a random idea, try to switch between windowed and full screen running (try the one you are not using now). Hopefully your current issue is related to your current game somehow, and will not always be present.

According to the Matrix Games staff it will be fixed in one of the upcoming updates.
I hope ASAP :( Because this bug makes RotS (German edition) unplayable!

Hey Cody!

Listen, are you running a mod or the base Distant World?
If you are running a mod, what I have found is that it is one of the graphics, like a ship.
For example, IGard has this way cool Tug that caused the very error you are seeing. I resized IGard's image, and for whatever reason, DW did not like the image. IGard's original tug worked fine...
So check what ships are present on your screen at the time of the ABEND/crash.

Gents,

Thanks a lot for the support. I was running basic Distant Worlds/Return of the Shakturi. The new official patch seems to have fixed this. Now, if I could just figure out how to refuel my fleets life would be good. [:)]
