Hey guys, I am trying to learn this game via Das's videos and reading these forums. So I started a game and used the option young for both the world and my empire but when I start playing I have I think 1 destroyer and I think I need to create more and more exploration ships but now sure on best way to do this and if this is the best way. And I also want to know what options should I start game with for a total noob like me? Thanks...

That depends a lot on your play style.

Some races and government types are better suited to early, aggressive warlike expansion, while others are better for quiet economic/population expansion.

Personally, I find humans to be the easiest race to play. Go democracy and focus on boosting your economy early in the game (luxuries!). When conflict comes, your diplomatic bonus will give you the option to end it early, or start it when you choose. Potentially starting off with carbon fiber and chromium as well can make things easier.

Ok thanks, but let me ask you when I first get into game should I keep all on auto and do what the ai suggests or should I take a few things into my own hands?

Personally, I started with suggestions on, and nothing automated. I find that the AI is too slow at colonizing, not aggressive enough at building up military power in the face of aggressive species (eg: Boskara), and where it places its fleets is nonsensical.

Leaving on the "suggest" for everything should give you a general feel of how the computer will approach issues (ship building, colony priorities, etc) - so you can build on that.

Oh - never turn on automation for:
taxation
research
character locations

taxation - you want to keep your taxes at 0% for your new colonies, to stimulate growth. Crank them up once they've hit max population.
research - Bakuras shipyard is immensely useful in the early game. In addition to a boost to colony development (read: $$$), it will allow you to spam out colony ships much more quickly. Getting this wonder will prove a boon to your early expansion.
locations - you want to make sure you drop your ambassador on likely troublesome neighbours to avoid a war you're not ready for. Use your spies to locate their homeworld if necessary (territory map). Automation also tends to make poor choices for locating scientists with multiple research area bonuses - these guys belong places with all research lab types - such as ports - not on some obscure research station.

I would automate pretty much everything except colonization, diplomacy and military ships and fleets. Keep the ones you take control of on "suggest" to get some laughs from stupid AI suggestions...

I would also suggest Research as a prime candidate for manual control early.

Kayoz above is a micro management happy power gamer. Do whatever you think is a good idea, both will work for learning the game. Contrary to him I would ignore characters at the start, tough. I ignore them in my games... Keep it simple.

I protest! I am not a "micromanagement happy power gamer"! I'm a pure, plain and simple - power gamer.

One thing you seem to misunderstand, is that I'll micromanage more at the beginning of the game than mid-to-late. If you get off to a bad start, it can be painful to recover. Moving a negative growth/happiness governor off the homeworld; manually sending out your fleets to clear wildlife or pirates; this sort of micromanagement is worthwhile when your empire spans 3 planets, but isn't really worth doing when it spans 30.

Never trust the AI to bust a pirate base.

I agree that micro management is more needed at the start. But it won't make me visit the character screen :)

I clear wildlife as I locate it (except some kaltor clouds in early game that are a bit hard to get rid off). I don't tolerate that stuff in my areas, and the attack message spam is annoying. Clear the source...

Derelict ship fields
Characters
Wonders

3 features the game would be better without.

Luckily one of them can be disabled.
